Are the current prices for these speakers at an all time high? Seen some reviews where people said they have bought them for £160-200, current price is now ~£250. I'm a bit reluctant to shell out £250 if the price is likely to change or its being sold cheaper elsewhere.

They used to be roughly £180 on here, I was tempted to buy them.
Being over £200 I wouldn't touch them untill they came down in price, doesn't make sense to me!

Generally things become cheaper when they have been on the market for awhile...

I wonder if it's anything to do with that there is very little competition in the PC speaker market. Other than the Z5500, what other 5.1 speakers offer an SPDIF connection?

PC speaker market is very stale. I remember holding off on the Z5500s years ago expecting a new product sometime soon. Never happened.

And i dont think there are any plans to either.

I havent seen a bad review about the 5500's and they have been for sale for years.

When I was looking in November they were about £230 new. Only think I really don't like about them is that they side speakers are a real PITA to wall mount as you can't get a straight line on the holes with a screwdriver/drill. It's a real fundamental design flaw with them.

Not as bad as you think. The speakers twist on their mount so you screw one side in first, twist the speaker and screw the other side in. Easy really.

I tried twisting every which way and the side mount ones definitely didn't twist enough to get a straight angle on the holes. Maybe I was missing something obvious but I checked each of them and I couldn't figure it out. Was pretty frustrating.

No contest, even budget speakers blow 5500's away, I really wouldn't pay much more than £100 for a set.

100 quid, are you sure  ?

Does this budget surround have about the same features:
Dolby pro logic movies and music upmixing.
DTS/Dolby digital decoding.
6 inputs, 4 analogs ( or 2, when you use the analog for 5.1) and 2 digital.
Remote control which works well.

I wasn't aware you could get any good 5.1 for 100 quid, I always thought anything remotely decent would cost that x10 so a thousand quid...

I will say that you can with careful 2nd buying get a decent "proper" 5.1 system for less than the cost of a new set of z-5500.

I got the following from the bay last year:

Wharfedale Diamond 8.3 floor front speakers
Wharfedale Diamond 8.1 rear speakers
Wharfedale Diamond 8 centre speaker
Wharfedale Diamond SW150 subwoofer

All mint, and only £35 collection only

I put that with an Onkyo TX-SR605 I got for £135 and then some decentish speaker cable and it's a cracking system for £200.

Pretty sure it matches or beats the specs of the z-5500's including a remote.

The only thing against this approach is size. The speakers aren't exactly small and neither is the av receiver.

I will say that I still have and use my z-5500's and love them. The above setup was bought to go with the tv.

If I had the room where the computer was I would put a similar setup on there.

Reason I asked is I'm starting to want an upgrade, and I hate the dreadful crossover of 125hz.

Ideally I'd want an amp that has exactly the same features if not more than the Z5500's ( must at least be able to clone fronts to back, and upmix 2.0 into 5.1 through Pro logic or similar, or leave it stereo, depending on what I like for whatever I'm doing).
Configurable high and low pass filters for all channels ( just like in my car, I personally like the normal speakers to get ''full range'' so they play anything from 50hz or even lower. But I want the sub to only work up to about 80hz...

And I'd self pick decent speakers, until I buy them I could even use the Z5500 sattelites along with a sub I've bought myself ...

I thought I needed over a thousand for a proper upgrade.
