Im thinking about getting one of these systems, and just a quick question.

Can I use a Serial Data extension cable
3s3mDep5_Image2.jpg
to make the volume control lead longer??

Ive just found out that a normal vga extension cable has only 14 pins, but the logi z-5500 is 15 pins, in 3 rows of 5,, is that right??

If I can find one with 15pins, shall I get a exspensive one? Cos ppl have tried extending the cable and you get a hissing sound or something like that because its not sheilded or something.

But if i cant get a 15pin cable, I will use the one that I got for my monitor that has 15pins, but need to change the one end with a gender changer adaptor

Are you 110% sure I wont damage anything? cos it says dont use a extension cable, Its really is a pain that I need one, cos the sub cant go under my desk cos the pc is there and it will nacker my pc,, so the lead has to travel all the way around to the side of my desk by the wall. I was thinking about going with the z-680 cos that wouldnt mess up my pc and would go under the desk,,, But I would regret not getting the z-5500, just because of a dam cabe

I cant wait untill I get a Z-5500 but I'm broke atm so I wont be able to get it for a while yet :( But might aswell get the extension cable sorted out for it :D

I wondered this too but the remote of the Z5500 does everything you need (everything from the control centre is on the remote).

One thing though - DON'T PUT THE SUB ANYWHERE NEAR A COMPUTER! - It uses a HUUUGE magnet and unless you want to corrupt your hard disk, I seriously advise (as Logitech do) at least 3 feet away.

Thats why I need the extension cable to get it well away from the pc

I'll try to get one with 15pins to be on the safe side or just get a gender changer adaptor for the vga lead i've got.

If anyone has the z-5500 and used a vga extension cable without any probs, please tell me your experiences, and put my mind to rest

thanks guys for all your help and that pic is real useful, thanks. I think I'll need longer then 3 meters cos it needs to travel along the bottom of 2 walls.

But still if anyone has these speakers and using a extension cable for the pod, please let me know guys.

magents corrupt floppy disks so why not harddisks? and the sub has one hell of a big magnet.

Just remember when you get it, dont crank up the volume streight away,, cos subs when new, dont move(vibrate) too good, there quite stiff. So try to resist cranking it up for the first few weeks.

Also ppl has nackered the sub or amp at high volume,,even a burning smell from the sub . But thats quite normal for the burning smell at high volume. But Who would crank the beast to full volume,, I wont be, its all about quality. Having it at such high volume it stresses parts out, and doing that when its new its not a great idea.

Treat it properly then it will last for years......hopefully. By all means crank it up, stretch its legs from time to time

Found more info out. Theres 2 versions of the z-5500 speakers, The first version with RCA connection to the sub., and the new version with non RCA connection to the sub and removable speaker wires, like the z-680.

some people on other forums complain of rattling of the subs cos the wires inside tap on the side of the box, and hissing noises cos of the volume pod, I guess logitech will have sorted these problems out with the 2nd version. :D

Heres a pic of back of speakers and sub of the new version

well when I get these speakers, I will need a new sound card, cos the list time I tried 5.1 setting on my onbord Realtek AC'97, the sub socket on the pc disables its self for hl2, cm4 and maybe more games. I spent hours trying to get the sub working in these games, but gave up in the end and went back to my 4.1 which the sub works from the speakers  Im gonna get a "Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 7.1 EAX Sound Card", might buy it at the same time or later on.

This is a pic of how Im going to have the speakers set up, and by the way the speakers are about a inch higher then the light switch and pointing towards me, with the sub on the floor of course.

Thats the reason I need a extension cable, but I might start of with placing the pod at the end of the desk by the wall.

Under my desk to the right of me is a cupboard where my pc goes in, then 2 draws by the side of that, so cant have the sub under my desk.

Plus cos Im not sitting in the centre of the room, I will have to make the right speakers louder or left speakers quieter, and make the rear speakers louder or front speakers quieter.

What you think guys,,Good or bad set up?

Heres a few comments from other people about these speakers:

*Gasp*.... I was amazed as soon as i grabbed the box.. Huge!! Got it home and opened it up right away... everything i needed was there, plus a massive Subwoofer!! I got it set up in minutes with more than enough wires for the speakers and let it rip! The sound that comes from the speakers is crystal clear!! Adjust the sub to preference and let it pound with the addition of your soundcard and its software!! The sound is incredible, sounds amazing even form the other side of my house, no distortion! If you were to listen to a water droplet, you would hear every splash, every ripple, and every echo to perfection... AHHHH I wanna go home and listen to music!!

Simply Awesome! I had the Klipsch Pro Media Ultra before until the amp died out on me (twice) so I decided to get the Logitech z5500 instead and to my ears, these sets from Logitech sound much better than the PMU's I previously owned. I don't do much gaming so this system is primarily used for listening to music and watching DVD's and let me tell you, these are arguably the best sounding system that can be had for the PC. The highs are crystal clear ( I mean ''make your ears bleed'' clear), the mids are great and the bass....my oh my, the bass is just ungodly. When people say it shakes things in the house, they weren't exagerrating. I don't understand why some people say the Logitechs don't sound as clear as the PMU's but this is simply not so. With the right settings in your EQ, these sound simply amazing. And yes, they are very clear. Aside from the many options it offers like an external decoder and tons of inputs, these speakers are a great bang for the buck

Amazing. Had 0 problems and would buy them again and again. The subwoofer, on the other side of the room about 15 feet away, was so powerful that after listening to it 5 minutes at 3/4 volume, it rattled a mug off of the shelf above the computer which dropped and cut me. Make sure nothing can fall, because this system will do the trick. Buy it now.

This speaker system is the best of the best, end of story. Not only does it give out enough bass to injur your internal organs, but it is also able to bring out the highest notes with the sattelites. The only problem with this system is that the speaker wires are fixed into the speakers, making it difficult to set them up in a big room, but these speakers aren't designed for a big room anyways... These speakers are praised by auto experts everywhere, and are dirt cheap. If you are looking for speakers for anything, this is your system.

WoW!!!! if you want any sort of sound system this is definately the one....It is amazing by far the best u can buy for your money!!!!! Its Crystal Clear Sound Out of the Speakers and The Sub has great crisp bass!!!! RECOMENDED seriously!!!

ok well they are gooooood...i know because about 9 pm last night i got a little visit from the local police telling me to turn it down...and i live in the country the people who live next door live about a minute away by car so i guess if u got money to pay all those noise pollution tickets get them.....WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO

SIMPLY AMAZING SOUND! I hardly use my stereo system any more because this speaker system sounds so good. In fact, I wouldn't have bought the stereo system if I owned this speaker system first. Great price and awesome sound!

Pic?
They should be seperate wires you stick into the speaker then the sub.

All you need is a RCA exextension lead to make them longer.

Plus theres seperate wire now with the secound version of the z-5500. So basically if you order the Z-5500 you should get the new version,, and heres the pic again of the new version

Can you set up the z-5500 so the sub works from the speakers somehow from the volume pob?? Cos with my onboard sound, the sub socket gets disabled for some strange reason in some games, If you can I wont buy a new soundcard when I get my speakers, and ther I can get a better one later on

so basically, if the sub dont work in a game, I will be able to change the settings on the volume pod, and get the sub working from the speaker signals??? Like 2x stereo or what ever its called?

Heres part of a review, thats quite intresting.....

because the subwoofer is gigantic, it creates a deadly EM (electro-magnetic) field, meaning if you put your pc within 2 feet of the subwoofer or any piece of electronics no matter what it is you can cause some serious damage, especially if its prolonged contact. The field is so strong that it increases EMI coming from the power lines that can sometimes create random pops or puffs of sound to your speakers both soft and hard sounds.
The length of wire for each speaker is more than long enough to accomodate your room, but the master control unit to the subwoofer system has a limited cable.
Despite the amazing quality in sound and thx certified it is definatly worth owning if you can afford it. BUT if you buy this hardware YOU MUST purchase/own a surge protector that can protect the sound from increased EMI fields as well as have enough room so that the EM field within the woofer doesn't make contact with your pc equipment. If you don't you will experience mayhem poofs and puffs coming from your speakers and may risk damage to other components.
Amazing but Dangerous!
