I have had mine for about 3 years, maybe more now and i just saw the price of them i think i paid £249.99(inc vat + delivery)...whats the huge price hike for? im not on about just on OCuk, but every place that sells them. cant be just casue of VAT rise no way...

They were on offer recently, but i suspect it's due to Logitech. They are being replaced by the Z906's which i've heard many people complain about (e.g., the fact that cost more and sound worse vs the Z5500's). The new Z906's are coming in at £329 so i guess they are just being price matched now?

hmmm, i guess so i was just suprised to see such a diffrence for how old they are now, not saying i wanna replace mine or anything im happy with what they do and they are great. but im glad i got them when i did cause i dont think i would pay the extra now lol

Fair enough man :) I really don't know how they have managed to keep their price for so long though. I was going to buy them about a year ago but they were around £300+

Makes sense. PiTA for anyone looking to buy some Z5500's before they completely disappear though.

The Corsair SP2500's are better and you can get them for about £199.99

You failed to mention that the SP2500's are 2.1 speakers and do not have optical inputs or DTS/Dolby decoding unlike the Z-5500 which are a 5.1 set complete with decoding and optical inputs.

The Z-5500 are (maybe were, if they're so expensive now) far better value for money and more versatile, as for the sound quality being better on the SP2500's I can't comment, however Corsair are hardly known for great audio products so I'll take your post with a gigantic shaker of salt.

His previous comment about the sp2500 got me looking into them as I was looking for an alternative to the z-5500s.

I've had my heart set on the logitechs for a while but knowing they were £180 at one point and coming towards their end of life has me looking for a good alternative. As you said: 5.1, optical input are a must with a £200 budget. What would you advise?

Well I think they were coming to the end of their life, as the Z906 were supposed to replace them but since they are actually worse than the Z-5500 I reckon they have a fair bit of life left in them yet!

I think the only competitor to them is some 5.1 Gigaworks set by Creative but they don't have the same feature set if I remember right, they were PC only speakers. (might be wrong)

I'd say go for 250 max, they must be around somewhere at that price or below surely

I paid 192 in 2008 for mine!

z5500 are mint.. just got some from logitech for £140.. bass is overpowering but well worth the money especially for their customer service if anything gones wrong with them

I have the Z5500 and although the sub is amazingly powerful, if you turn down the bass on the control unit it no where near "over powering."

As stated you can control the bass. The positioning of the speakers in your room - especially the woofer -will greatly affect the sound quality. Pretty sure there are guides on the internet about proper setting up etc.

Ive had them for two years, and recently updated the firmware and i absolutely love them. Fantastic value for money, and as stated they are so versatile. PC sound, wii sound and dvd/blue ray sound all through one system. I use mine with a xonar and you can configure pretty much every aspect of them to meet your needs.

Pricing wise its a shame that they have become so expensive. My advice would be to look for some secnond hand ones. If you're willing to collect/arrange a courier you can get them for circa 150/160. (This is how i got mine)

I've been offered a set of these for £100.

I was looking for a new set of speakers anyway but was ideally looking for the z2300 ( less wires ).

Do you think they are worth getting for that price? Like stated above im scared the Bass will become too overpowering even on low :D

£100 is a fantastic deal. I planned on getting these over a year when they could be had for £190 brand new, I saved up but by the time I went to buy them they were going for over £280!!!

i never knew u could upgrade the firmware on these? that something new i learnt today.. cheers. i heard the 906 is worse than z5500, can anyone verify this?

Apparently they sound worse, but take a look at some reviews as i think each one is a bit different. Yeah only learnt about the firmware update through thier support, but solved a couple of issues for me (popping noise etc) and also i swear theyve gotten louder

5.1 surround now works from my wii too which is very nice :)
