After debating between this and the Creative S750, I have decided to go for the Z5500 as it just seems to be better for me and offers more WOW per £ :)

Would like to know if the speakers can provide a deecent sound without the SUB being on for late night gaming/films?

If the SUB is low, is it actually low?

Also, if money isnt an issue, are the Z5500 still a better choice than the S750's? Im almost certain they are. Uses are music and games. Do many games support 7.1?

Will there be a time when 5.1 will be dropped in favour of 7.1?

Thanks.

no small satellites will provide BASSSSS (man) without a subwoofer. its just a limitation of using small speakers. thats exactly why the sub is there. i couldnt tell you how low you can turn the subwoofer from memory, but any soundcard worth its salt would be able to attenuate the bass and achieve pretty much the same thing anyway.

7.1 is not really a priority over 5.1 for pc speakers, you arent going to gain much. you'd get more from getting a better set of 5.1's in the first place:)

The control box that comes with the z5500 allows you to adjust the levels of all the speakers individually, so you could just turn down your sub when needed

yeah 5.1 via rca, optical, and coax, all connected at same time and control box allows you to switch between them, it also allows you to split the rca 6 channel input into 3 seperate stereo channels

edit: you need three 3.5mm female stereo jack to male rca phono converters, to use rca 5.1 channel input, if i remember right, available cheap at popular electronics components retailers

the S750's are probably the best money no object speakers i've got them and they are awesome.

Frequency Response:
S750's: 20Hz - 40kHz
Z5500: 33Hz - 20kHz

However.....
if you want to connect a ps2, dvd player that sort of thing the Z5500 are much better

on the 7.1 vs 5.1 front: most games do support 7.1 and blu-ray and HD-dvd have support for 7.1 sound via DTS master audio and i think Dolby true HD

that may be the case but it's an illustration of the differnce that having satilites with 2 drivers, also those are the published specs

i know, you didnt do anything wrong lol. but you have to realise those specs are widely inflated. you couldnt get a sub alone for the price of those speakers that would be flat down to 20hz. when they quote a frequency responce, its normally wildly inaccurate:)

for instance, xbit's measurements of the s750's subwoofer:

its not so good really:)

You cannot get bass <80hz from little sats, and there's no way in hell those Creative's have a FR down to 20hz, probably +/- 15dB. Probably no lower than 30hz +/- 3dB

Sat speakers without the subwoofer will sound anemic, give me a larger pair of standmounts without a subwoofer rather than sat+sub any day of the week.

sigh...

ummm the s750 has a huge sub... so will get down to 20hz (useless for the op but there we go) and the fact the it's got tweeters meaning i reckon it could go up to 40khz
its an 8" driver. as far as subwoofers go, its tiny. look at the link i posted, it'll will tell you everything ive said is true.

...ooooorrr, get an spl meter and see how flat it really is. try playing a 20hz test tone through your pc and see how loud it really is:) as fo the other end of the spectrum, well. most tweaters would cover anything like that range. most 'normal' tweeters are good for about 20-25k

Sub respone on that looks worse than the Z5500's.

They are rated at 25Hz though, I dont think a little 8" can get down that low though, my Z5500's 10" only just managed 30Hz allthough it would seem to go down to 25Hz but its pushing super hard and not good for it.

read the conculsion:
Creative GigaWorks S750 is undoubtedly a classy speaker system and I think it has no rival today in the sector of multimedia systems. If you go for the best, it’s yours! Just come and get it

thats hardly suprising, but its still only a pc speaker system. look at it another way, if you think they are good, then you will mightily impressed with a decent amp and speaker setup:)

You're right, however they're perfectly fine for my bedroom. You could say that about any AV item, I could replace the LE32R74 in my bedroom with a KDL-40X3500 etc...more than happy with my S750 :)

Thats what they think dont mean they are true, I think the Klipsch PM5.1 would deffenitly be a rival, it has 2 8" subs and also has decent sattelites with tweeters but then again the amp seems to die a lot, but it seems people have been having this problem with the S750's aswell.

I think it is about personal taste in the end, I've seen people commenting on how they've tested these systems and have found the Z5500 to be better than the S750 or found the PM5.1 to destroy the competition etc..

I was under the impression that the drivers in the z5500 sattellites are like kef uni-q drivers, ie a woofer with a tweeter in the middle of the speaker, maybe im wrong dunno :) but if you press on the cone of speaker you'l see that the bullet in the middle (tweeter imo) is seperate from the rest of the cone, and does not move with it

either way, the z5500 sound pretty damn good to me, and i used to have a £300 amp and 5.1 wharfdale diamond speakers (floorstanders for main left/right) attached to my pc

i guess it dosnt mean to much being that the z5500 are pc speakers, but they are thx certified after all

The Z5500's use the Tangband W3-871S drivers, they dont have tweeters, in the middle they have a phase plug, apparently it acts as a tweeter but I dont think thats true, I think its mainly for cooling?
