Are these still classed as the speakers to beat?

Had seen them in offer and was wondering what people's thoughts were. Seen a few reviews where they say they're not that great, lack sound detail etc.

I have these, I got them because they where a good price at the time [£175 18 months ago] they have multiple inputs and sound good to me. The sub woofer although big is not too huge like it is on some systems. How it compares to a stand alone separates setup would depend on how much you were to spend, there is always something better

Imgutted cos I only just bought mine a short while ago and I paid just on £390 for mine.

Im devastated cos they are absolutely awful compared to my hellish old Altec Lansing setup that I got them to replace.

The bass is strong, but it sort of sounds like its added on, and it does not quite go with the rest of the sound... This is only on some music tracks mind you, and I am a seriously fussy pleb when it comes to my music, plus I have demostration tracks etc that punish and kill even the best sound systems so I am a little unfair.
There is something I did instantly notice with this setup however, is that there is little to no treble... Do these have tweeters in them? I dont know, but I did cure it by simply wiring up a pair of tweeters to the main 2 speakers and how I do indeed get the expected T TT TT TTTS ( Thats my impression of a closed then open hihat riff and its spot on ok? LOL )

They do have multiple inputs sure so you can rest assured that you can use the best one that you can, but when I was messing about with them, I found absolutely ZERO difference between the analog and the Optical input quality. Maybe that only shows up when you have a rubbish sound card then?

That said, the onboard optical on my Motherboard was so jittery, it was useless.

That said I have had a set and they are pretty fantastic and I am seriously wondering if there is a better set. Then I got the altecs and the Z5500 got given to my mate.

And yes, I do regret it... They were far too good to just give away.

Just as a small add-on for this thread.

Im starting to pack up my stuff a little bit by a little bit, because we are not actually moving until after xmas, so were taking our time.

Since buying the Z906 speakers, The Altec sub was soooo heavy, that I have just moved it into the corner, and so since we started packing up some stuff, the Z906 box came into play and thats now packed up and I have gone back to the Altec Lansing setup.

I am NOT going to go back to the z906 speakers.

The Altec on the basic Analog wires is far superior to the Logitech, even on Optical.

My current sound card is a SoundBlaster Z and that is the ONLY card that I have tried with the Optical - I did test the onboard but it was for some reason useless.

I have a number of other carsd that I could try of course, all of them in the high end level such as the Asus STX, D2X, and Strix cards and also a Recon3D thats supposed to be rubbish compared to the Z range, but I never noticed ANY difference when I went from that to the Z through the OMNI, oh yeah, and I got an Omni too! LOL

The ONLY problems that I do have with the Altec Lansings, however, are that they have no volume control nor do they have a headphone jack and so swapping between speakers and headphones can be a chore.

With the Recon3D, I had the drive panel that gave me both the headphone jack, and the volume control, plus, when I moved the headphones to the headphone socket in the card, I could then use the button to slect and this was brilliant for me.

The Strix has the external box that had the bonus that I could leave the headphones plugged in, however if I tried swapping from one to the other, almost every app that I had, would crash if its playing any audio.... That was utterly stupid and useless.

My keyboard ( Logitech G510s ) has headphones and mic sockets that I can plop the headphones into just fine anytime, so why that stupid strix card would crash, I dont know? - another Windows 10 issue perhaps?

Shame cos the card was not that bad at all... I will ofcourse try it with the z906 speakers some other time.

Now that I am back on the Altecs, I think I will also plop the Recon3D back in. As I said, even though most links tell me the Z is superior, I am not in agreement with that at all, I am sure that they are identical in their quality ( I am ready to be proven wrong though when I do swap them... I just cannot find teh sodding cables for them now ? )

Anyway, thought I would just add on to this for some reason or other!
