I'm at Sheffield university studing international relations and politics. Recently I started to become involved with the politics society - this is their website:

http://www.freewebs.com/politicssociety/

As you will see if you look at the link it's not the most beautiful site in the world!

Anyway I've been thinking I may have a bash at Dreamweaver and some CSS etc and try to create a new site, with forums and the like. it will just be something simple as I'm by no means very good at design! Hopefully though even I can make something that's ok

On the bad at design front, I was wondering if anyone from these forums with photoshop experience would like to have a quick bash at making a decent header graphic? Because I doubt I can make anything decent! The current one can be found at the above link. Oh and this is the university's site with logo: www.shef.ac.uk (it doesn't have to incorporate it).

To anyone that makes anything, thanks very much! Obviously if I go ahead and make a site and it goes up, credit will be given where it's due :)

P.S - can anyone tell me what I need to know or learn to get a news page on a site, whereby different people with password access can post news and possibly where people can the add comments to that news?

Just as a warning question - are you allowed to use the (uni) logo? Some universitys are very strict on if it can be used or not... For instance on posters, presentations, websites etc...

Good point - may be best just to have something to do with 'sheffield politics' or 'politics society' etc. Although the rugby club uses the logo on their page and afaik they've had no problems (flatmate is a captain). I'd be suprised if it appeared on their radar but you never know!

for the news part to be on a site like that you will need to learn php and it wil take too much of your time up so dont bother, plus your not smart enough to learn it anyway.

ok jokes aside heay its php that youd need to learn though it can be quite hard to learn php as its not just simple get it to do this, theres things like security which make it an bugger to learn.

try this site if you want for some good turotials:

Instead of designing a header graphic, which I think look pretty bad anyway, unless your a photoshop guru, why not just use a stock image.

Something relevant like:

http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/when/nighttime/1207494_big_ben.php?id=1207494

or

http://www.istockphoto.com/file_clo...the_thames_houses_of_parliament.php?id=207879

And write the name of the society on it.

The only site I can think of which shows what i'm on about is:

http://www.register1.net/

I.e. the way they've set it out with the image.

I think you have more chance of it looking good this way.

Thanks for that - definitely a good idea. Much better to keep it simple and classy.

Absolutely want hosting without ads! Possibly a proper domain name too.. not many people are interested in the society and I think it could be helped if we just had a clear and easily remembered/accessible information site.

As for the PHP, that site looks really good - may have to take a look at the beginner's tutorials and work my way up, I should probably get a working site built first.

I would set up a CMS which will allow you to set different people different access rights, be it writer, guest, member, admin etc.

It comes complete and with a little tweaking you can have it looking the way you want it to. You can also add on things like a photo gallery and email everyone via the control panel.

Search for Joomla and give it a try. There are others out there too but I havent really tried any of them so cant comment.
