Ok, im 17 and i did a quote with a few insurance companies on the net(directline,AA,norwich union etc) and the cheapest quote i got with me as the main driver was £4.3k.

I knew insurance would be high at my age, but i never expected it to be as high as 4.3k?

The car i put down in the quote was an underwhelming Ford Focus, 5Dr, 1.4l with an 02 plate.

Anyone else in the same position, who was just got their license at my age who has insured a car?

Well, i insured my motor just after i passed at 18. 96' VW Polo 1.6 GLX for £1500.

But it shouldnt be as high as 4.3K for you. Put in an older motor.

Not quite the same but when i was looking at learning to drive my dad had a look around and for a 17yo just passed on a 1l nova or similar it was about £1600 extra as a named driver.

Your quote seems a little steep but not extortionate.

And they wonder why so many young people drive without insurance?

I got quotes for a Rover 214 when I was 19.

Without Pass Plus, every insurance company I tried wanted around £4400.

With Pass Plus, that figure halved to £2200.

Try www.elephant.co.uk adding your parents as named drivers to bring down the price.

Very true. Adding mine saved me about £600. And there's very little they can do to stop you doing it, unlike where some insurance companies have stopped allowing named drivers under 25.

What are they going to do? No named drivers over 50, lol

I just did a quote with Tesco, with my main driver my father, and me as an additional driver for £948.

I wouldn't say i live in a rough area, if i was to get my dad to insure the car with only him on the policy it would cost him £250.

You can't do that if you will in fact be the main driver. If you are going to be driving the car most then you will have to insure it in your name. It's worth it in the long run anyway as NCB is valuable.

Elephant gives me £3999, with me as the main and my dad as additional..
i won't actually be the main driver as its my sisters car.

Try quotes on 1 and 1.2L engines and 3 doors. 5 doors makes the insurer think "Oh he's going to have passengers quite often then..."

Then why do all of these quotes have you as main and your father as additional? Where does your sister come into all of this?

It's worth noting that some insurers allow the named driver to be nominated as the main driver. Maybe worth considering whilst you are still young.

Do named drivers have to live in the same house that the car is registered to, or could you still add a parent even if they live say 200 miles away and will probably only see the car once every 6 months or so and definitely never drive it? :)

Unfortunately it probably comes with living in London.

I'm currently paying approx £700pa for my car insurance, parked on drive at my parents house.

I did a quote for parking on the street in North London with the same company and it went up to £2,000, an increase of nearly 200%.
