I signed up to the next website because I was going to order some jeans from there.

they sent me a catalogue which someone dumped outside my door even though I never requested one and I didn't opt into anything.

I thought nothing of it but next sent me a letter saying I owe them 3.50 for the catalogue WTF?!?!?!?

technically you could sign up to the next website use someone else's name and address and they get a bill of £3.50

I wasn't signing up for a catalogue I was signing up to a website like any other retailers website FFS, they can do one if they think they are getting 3.50 from me

erm....
Balance Present Balance : £0.00
Recent Sales : £3.75
Returns value since last statement : £0.00
Your available credit : £296.00
Your credit Limit : £0.00

how can they give you credit just for signing up with a username and password to a website?

Sounds interesting.
Where did you sign up?
Sure there wasn't a box to tick or untick?

Pretty sure I signed up to next to buy furniture two years ago, never got a categlogue unsolicited. Nor a demand for money.

Looks like Next bent you over and went in dry.

Just don't pay them. For £3.50 they are not going to chase you up.

I always make sure I'm not opting into anything whenever I create an account on a website so I don't get spammed with newsletters etc

the website says
The standard Directory charge of £3.75 per season will apply. We will notify you before we send any chargeable publication(s) giving you the chance to cancel.
I never got any notifications and never said I wanted a free god damn catalogue

looking at money saving expert forums they have been trying it on for over 5 years with the same ****

I haven't got a NEXT account but last time I looked you can't buy anything from their website unless you agree to them setting up a credit account after a credit check. Edit. as above.

although the T's&C's are not typical - they are obvious; they tell you before you read them that they will conduct a credit search. the key is also in the words 'my first directory'

I don't agree with it, but yea - it's clear enough and I bet a lot of people get caught out by it - it's the only one of its kind I've seen.

for those who're wondering:

and the terms:

but it says
By clicking on the continue button below you are agreeing to a credit search being carried out. This credit search will NOT appear on your credit file when viewed by other lenders, unless you take the option of credit from us, or we are unable to offer you credit. It will only be visible to you and Next.

If you do take the option to pay on account, you will not be charged interest if the balance is paid in full on receipt of your statement. If you choose not to pay on account, the option to pay via credit or debit card will still be available during checkout. By selecting to receive the Next Directory you agree to be sent further Directories for additional seasons. The standard Directory charge of £3.75 per season will apply. We will notify you before we send any chargeable publication(s) giving you the chance to cancel.

I never ordered anything, I never choose any option to take credit from them.#

it says no where they will give you a £300 credit limit on the website just because you make an account.

I assumed it was just like signing up to debenhams , argos or anywhere else as long as you didn't request a god damn catalogue or try to order on credit.

people on money saving expert are saying even after they requested no catalogues be sent out they started appearing anyway again with attempted billing for the catalogue what a joke.

they can close my account and GTFO!

never buying anything from a next store again after this! what an outrage :p

oh and I never
. By selecting to receive the Next Directory you agree to be sent further Directories for additional seasons.
on the next page it asks if you want a free catalogue or not I chose no... if I didn't want a free one why send me out a copy for 3.50? makes no sense....
so surely just by creating an account they can't try to claim I am selecting to receive anything?
that makes it sounds like its a choice and not a requirement of making an account.

you can say it's my own fault and I suppose it is but you can't tell me they didn't set that up to be as confusing as hell making it sound like there's choices and attempted to trick people

so err sign up with the address of every NEXT store in the country. or shall we use our local mps?

Looks like you can just register with a name and address and they'll open an account and send a 'free catalogue'. I thought with the talk of credit checks the next step was to ask for your card details. I like Tefal's idea :D

It gives you an option of not taking the catalogues which is what I opted for when I signed up. None have appeared as yet!

I've paid for the items I have ordered so far by credit card and now no details regarding credit appear on my account details.
