ok, bear with me on this as its 'just' a thought. how do people train? is it for months or weeks or a natural fitness?

i was shattered after running for 0.75 of a mile today but i also did 10 miles on the exercise bike in a record time on maximum after it.

is it a different kind of fitness? i know the best training is running obviously but how and when? can you train every day or do you need a day off?

just a thought............

Is it just me or did that make anyone else lol?

If you can't work out "how" to run then you should NOT attempt a Marathon.

Sorry.

if you were doing weight lifting you would use weights, but how and what weight i have know idea. similar question to what i'm asking now.:p

how much? like 1mile one week, a couple of times then 2 miles next week and build up like that or slower than that? increase by 0.5 mile?

It depends on what time you want to do the marathon in: if you go to a running forum and ask about there'll be plenty of veteran marathoners that can suggest what kind of training you'll need if you want a sub Xhrs time. A training plan is also a good idea, something along the lines of this. If you're starting from absolute scratch you may need to do some prep training though.

I've never done a marathon, 10K is the farthest I've been, but if you go for it good luck, just listen to your body. Push yourself, but don't wreck yourself.

Natural fitness and if you've been running for years helps a lot, I can pretty much do the half marathon without any training, other than the usual runs during the week.

Marathon I have to usually prepare 4 months before, but really dont go with didicated plans and just aim to up the mileage a bit.

Starting from scratch I wouldnt personally entertain a marathon until I had been running a year or two.

If you've entered for 2010 then get training now, dont wait until you know you are in.

I hate plans and think they are the worse thing that you can adopt. It assumes that everyone is the same and doesnt take account of lifestyle, work, injuries, and other factors.

Reason why imo you need to have some experience, and know what your body can and cannot do. I can run around 3.30 but that plan would kill me after 1 week.

believe me, if i can do i WILL regardless of how fit i am. i've had to relearn how to do things you(and i, i suppose) take for granted and if it's down to me i won't fail. i refuse to. if it was down to other people then i have to allow for their time/skills etc. anyways as i said, its just a thought from somebody whose never done any marathons or prepwork etc. at moment i can run 0.75 on the tread mill at physio at 5mph in about 8 minutes. was hoping to do 10minutes but next week will have to wait for that. the physios don't want me pushing too hard but i didn't get here sat on my arse. :)

thanks for the input and concern though, it wasn't intended as a dig or ought. :)

Not to put a downer on you, but you really have a long road ahead of you to do a marathon as 5mph isn't very fast, you should also go and get some running shoes fitted if you plan to put a lot of miles in, best of luck.

For marathon training most people will find that time is their biggest problem.

You really need to try and go running at least twice a week through the week and once at the weekend.

As you get to within two months of the marathon you should be looking at running for about an hour and a half, 2 or 3 times a week on weekdays, and then for 2.5-3 hours on a Sat/Sun.

On your longest run during training you should be looking to get to roughly 15-20miles. You shouldn't be training past that sort of distance.

The main training isn't the long runs at the weekend - but the regular hour to hour and a half runs through the week. Each time you should be looking at running faster and further during the alloted time, rather than trying to run for longer.

it's a start though so i can build on it. i didn't do it running shoes either just pub trainers(some onfire things with flat soles). :)

don't worry about downers, i take things as they come and i'd rather be criticised than praised. praise doesn't help you improve but criticism does!:)

anyways the reason for the thread is i know its abig ask and may not be physically possible so i'd like to go in with my eyes wide open. :)

after tring to jog a bit up a road and about collapsing i think i've found my physical limit lol i can do 0.75m on a treadmill and today was about 0.25m today. i am NOT fit yet. :( weird, i can do 10miles on an exercise bike on max resistance but i struggle big time running. guess it must have something to do with the limitation of my rebuild knee and busted leg. :(:o
