Hi all,

How many companys in London offer London Weighting? I have been speaking to a few people and all of them said that around 90% of companys offer this.

I am currently looking for a new job, but most of the jobs I have applied for, doesnt state that its got London Weighting added into the sallary.

Can someone clear this up for me? :)

Only companies that have non-London offices are going to mention London weighting because there's no need for them to mention it otherwise. Indeed, it's likely only companies with standardised pay-scales will mention it. Having said that 90% of companies will pay more for London staff than countryside staff.

Maybe I'm being simple but surely an easy way to tell is to look at the salaries on offer in London for that job and then compare to another random part of the country - say Manchester or something? If there is a significant difference then London weighting is presumably already pre-applied.

Im looking for 2nd line roles in Central London, if a job is paying 24-25K a year in the advert, would London Weighting add another couple of grand ontop of the basic sallary?

Is london weighting pretty common now?

thanks for your replys

Usually an advert will include London weighting unless it specifically states '+ London weighting'.

What is it?

You also get extra money, but not as much, the closer you live to London in some jobs. For instance IKEA in Bristol gave us 10p extra an hour for being not far off London, northerners I assume didn't get this

I had no idea what you were talking about, how was I meant to when you can't even spell what you were talking about?

I get just under £4k london weighting - which isn't a huge amount, and pushes me well into the 40% bracket. It's not a legal requirement as far as I know, but more of an incentive, and to cover commuting costs. Not all companies do it, in fact it tends to be bigger larger employers that tend to do it AFAIK. It helps, but it's not amazing.

Tis what I thought when I saw my payslip but it's only 10p and money and living cost wise it's close enough to warrant the extra. London has a greater influence on land value then you think

I think they gave you the extra 10p because they felt sorry for you.

Bristol is around 2 hour drive from London. About the same distance away as Birmingham is.
