London

The thing is, there's two London's. One is cosmopolitan with world famous sights and attractions, shopping, tourists, open top busses and advertising boards as big as some of those busses. Then there's place like where I live in Hampstead which is quiet, leafy, beautiful , safe and green. If you live somewhere just outside Zone 1, maybe Zone 2 as well, it will feel like any town in Britain, but with a world famous city a few minutes away.

The problem I have with most British towns is that they all look the same. Chain shops/stores litter the high street. Throw in the obligatory charity shops, Asian cuisine, betting shops and the odd pub, you can be literally anywhere in the UK. Ugly and boring with nothing to do. No wonder teenage pregnancies and single council house mums are so rampant :p

This is a pretty terrible post.

Are you suggesting our social ills would be solved if everyone upped and moved to leafy Hampstead? I'm sure this is just a way of ostensibly bragging about your quality of life. Hampstead has its problems, too, you know. An entire country of arrogant cokeheads wouldn't necessarily be any nicer a place.

See, generalisations are easy.

Actually I redact my last comment: not just arrogant cokeheads but also neurotic bourgeoisie housewives that fret over kitchenware branding.

Or places like Hampstead. Thought that goes without saying?

 Oh yes, I also hate the people that knock this country and British culture but then refuse to go back to their native lands.

British Culture this, British native that, Great Britain blah blah blah;

All this British nonse annoys me. I'm not British I'm English. Every form I fill in states this.

You talk about British Identity, but there is no British Identity. It's a term used to group all the Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English into one easy fit, and quite frankly it's ****. Britain generally is a hole, which stems from the top (different topic altogether). But with some nice places dotted around.

You talk about London, foreigners etc etc, but honestly what do you expect from a truely worldwide City? If you went to London and the place was full of kilt wearing scottish people you'd moan about it losing it's identity. You moan about all of these foreigners, immigrants etc, but a lot of true Londoners come from an immigrent past, very similar to New York, people flocked to London.

Does the fact that you are not white your self - which you state earlier on in the thread (after all Britiain is a white 'country') mean that you are not truely British? So what if someone who has the passport and all the identification speaks with a different accent, or looks different than you? It makes no difference what-so-ever.

London is an English city, a city which doesn't forget it's history. Literally everywhere within London is strewed with history about it's past; That's not losing it's identity. That's preserving it's identity by not hiding these things.

Finally - London is amazing because of it's people. Central London has so many different things to do, you can't possibly find something which isn't for you within Central London. Every time I have been down there, I have never had an issue. Some people are busy, so like to rush about, but let them. It doesn't affect me if someone brushes past on the escalator.

So the whole country has to move to middle-class comfort?

That makes a lot of sense. I wonder why they haven't all thought of all before :o

Oh wait.

Basically your post was thinly-veiled class snobbery. All those dirty proles with their teen pregnancies and delinquency! If only they all moved to an area where the average house-price is £750,000! Ingrates!

Come on you surely must see the stupidity of your comment.

Did my degree in London and it was good as a student. Left as it wasn't the place to live on a start-of-career salary. Just moved back after 3 years and I love it. So many different types of foreign restaurants available. Finally good Korean food, there is one ok place in Brighton.

Hmm, how about Staines or Kingston. Proper bang for your buck and wouldn't break the bank.

Bit late to change it now ha ha. Had a look on google streetview and it didn't look /too/ bad. Will be incredibly useful being able to get the DLR straight up to the Olympic park and avoiding the central line, which I imagine is going to be rammed.

It's never too late - Deptford really IS that bad.
Woke up drunk in the Deptford bus depot one evening and tried to stumble back in the general direction where I need to be...near death experience right there for ya :D !

Staines?

Really?

Id rather move to Palestine.

And I'd rather voluntarily stab myself to death with a blunt needle, but if needs be ...

But there are some really nice places in South West that cheaper and nice. Worcester Park and New Malden comes to mind.

100% agree.

It is a dump, and for those that say there are not many foreigners must be one themselves because the place is overrun with non-white English, unfortunately which is happening with most cities these days.

If they follow our laws and speak enough English that you can communicate with them if need be, whats your problem with it?

Unless someone stabbed you in the eye with a samuri sword... in which case i am sympathetic.

Over run with non-white English, makes them sound like rats...

Is that you John Terry?

As someone who takes the Tube at rush hour every day, I don't know what the fuss is about.
Just avoid the Northern and Picadilly lines (at any time of day really), you'll be fine. The south-bound Bakerloo line is really bad in the mornings too.

Living in London (and commuting) is expensive. Commuting also makes running a car even less appealing. Add in the cost of parking, the scarcity of parking (especially further towards the centre) and the traffic...

I'm not sure where else I'd like to live really, any of the old towns like Canterbury, Lincoln, Chester, Bath, York etc. would be nice. The down side is that everywhere is quiet compared to London.
The eating is fantastic and there's always stuff to do, museums, events and new exhibitions - all for free usually.

As far as places to live go, I can't honestly say there's another city I like more. Montreal is a close second. :)

TL;DR I like London, it is good (mostly).

Did someone say living in Kingston wouldn't break the bank? What planet are you on?

I'm in the middle of trying to find a room for around September around Bow/Mile End/Stratford/Greenwich and currently everywhere is busting my balls. It's mental.

Hell with it.

Nazi, Nazi, Nazi, Hitler ein ist furher, Masterrace, Holocaust, final solution.

Godwin'd this terrible thread.

What about somewhere close to London, say an hour or so by train? You could get in to see old friends or family really easily then.

I'd love to live in london for a time, but the cost makes it somewhat beyond my means :D

Have you had a look around Stockwell / Vauxhall / Brixton? There are some reasonable places to rent for reasonable prices.
Don't discount other stops along the new Overground route too, it goes from Highbury & Islington to West Croydon currently.
