London

What about somewhere close to London, say an hour or so by train? You could get in to see old friends or family really easily then.
I'd love to live in london for a time, but the cost makes it somewhat beyond my means :D
It depends where you want to go to, and where you work... Also how much you want to spend. :)

Trains from Cambridge run into King's Cross and take under an hour. And you can get trains from Brighton into London Victoria in under an hour - There is a huge catchment area within an hour's travel.

I live in Zone 4, which is about 20 minutes on the train to Victoria / London Bridge.

Commuting is expensive, so I would usually recommend living as close as possible to where you want to be. If you want to be in the centre, anywhere along a tube line is good.

If you're young and ambitious, London is where you need to be :D. High living costs are easily offset by high salaries and there are so many opportunities.

Living and working in London is not as bad as some people think... ;)

Try explorering the world a little to understand what traffic congestion really is...

A few drops of rain in Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo and the cities stop dead...

And people who live in Russia would probably say, one drop of snow and London stops dead.

If you get rare weather conditions for your area of course there will be difficulties. How often does it rain in Rio compared to London?

Lived there for ten years for most of my twenties / early thirties.

Absolutely loved living there. So much to do and see and I have made so many friends from all over the world which would not have happened anywhere else in this country.

Still think about it every day. People that state they hate it have not explored it enough.

It is and has always been a very transient City. People come and live there for a few years then move on.

During the winter it's a lot, in fact not all that different from London .

The problem is England is a nation of complainers, we will complain about everything, my point was that traffic in London is far better than people realise.

Every morning I see traffic backed up for about 30miles entering Rio, and every night I see it backed up for around 50 miles as peope leave Rio, this equates to traffic outside my home for around 2-3 hours or 4 hours + on Friday evenings.

Is London that bad these days ?

100% agree.

It is a dump, and for those that say there are not many foreigners must be one themselves because the place is overrun with non-white English, unfortunately which is happening with most cities these days.

Overrun? Estimates are around 70% white in London.

Hilarious thread. London has always been multicultural and very welcoming of people of different cultures. Xenophobic idiots can **** off.

Could've bet my last penny Toon_mad would turn. If that ape Dirtydog was still posting here, he'd be in there with his bile as well.

Did someone say living in Kingston wouldn't break the bank? What planet are you on?

I'm in the middle of trying to find a room for around September around Bow/Mile End/Stratford/Greenwich and currently everywhere is busting my balls. It's mental.

Depends what you earn/want to pay. I'm pretty sure the area you're looking in would still carry some residual expense from what people now are charging for accommodation in that area due to the Games. Go where there's no tube but overground only. Usually cheaper.

CBA to read all the thread but here's my 2p:

The loss of britishness thing boils down to language. Too many first generation immigrants. You can go a long time without hearing English being spoken.

I don't care if someone is as black as the proverbial fireback, a jew with ringlets and a wide brimmed hat, a wizened old indian, or Charlie ******* Chan.

As long as I hear ENGLISH, I'm good.

London is a ticking time bomb

Once a great proud city, now a hell hole with bankers and too many immigrants to count

Yup. I find it disheartening how so many posters have taken my comments out of context, you can't air any opinions without being accused of being a racist or people insinuating that you are against all non white people. Simply not the case. I travel all around the UK for my job and so I get to see many different aspects of our society and deal with people from all backgrounds.

Don't take it personally but I can't change the fact I do not like the lifestyle the city offers.
