hey ppl

me and my mate are intrested in linking up our networks.

we live about 1 mile apart there is line of site .....untill they built a house there.

i was wondering if any1 has any information that could help us

my idear was to get a access point and boost the signal by using somthing like this

http://www.netgear.co.uk/extra/b_wirelessantenna_ant24d18.php

so then he should be able to pick up the signal from his wireless adapter.

this is hopfully gona be a part of a larger network as we have some more friends that maybe intrested to join.

some of u are gona ask why? well its a lil project i have in my head and i need to learn more about wireless networking.

thanks hope some one can help :)

to be honest wireless networking is not that stable, and the span of a mile is a great distance, without taking into consideration the amount of distortion that will be picked up from the out door enviroment. with the higher netgear routers which claim to be able to give 1000% more distance coverage it will be plausable, but again with out doors it would be dodgy.

Would a VPN link over Broadband not have enough bandwidth? I use that to link 3 sites, 2 in Wrexham and 1 in Birmingham, it works mostly, with only a couple of DNS problems, but i use Active Directory and other things your probably wouldn't need?

You'd need a high gain (18dB +) directional antenna. Have a look at my mates site. He's had a couple of 1m parabolica's (24dB or thereabouts) cover a distance of around 3.5 miles with around 8mbps of throughput.

We've got a wireless network around the town here sharing a couple of 2meg connections. I think the longest reach is around 1/4 to 1/2 a mile with a couple of 16dB panels at each end. Its good enough for two or three people to play bf2 over.

i know its a risk im just wondering if it is posable.

thinking about the distance i dont think it is a mile probably half of one ill get a picture to show you the distance.

as for vpn not quite what i want as im intrested in learning wireless networking

as for the panels would my mate have to have a panel aswell to send data back.

tis all up in the air atm as im still learning the basics :)

my plan is to set up a lil network between some of my friends but if we all have directonal antenas tis gona be hard for us to pick eachother up. and i can not afford to buy 2 or 3 antenas.

(we r in a triangle shape)
