Hi,
I am looking to set up a wireless connection between a friends house (around 350-400m away) mainly because he can get broadband and i cant... lol :(.

I will be using this antenna : Netgear ANT24D18 18dBi Directional Antenna,
apparently with a range of up to 10miles.

I have 2 installation options, the easiest one being for me to install the antenna in his loft, this would mean the signal travelling through 1 wall, trees and then an open field for 300-350m. Would this work?
If not, i could install it in the top of the tree, meaning the signal would only have to travel across a flat field for 350m.

Also, do i need a particular antenna to receive the signal at my house or i can i just use my current belkin PCMCIA wireless card?

Lastly, does anyone know of an ISP that comes with a free wireless modem w/detachable antenna/compatible with the Netgear ANT24D18 18dBi Directional Antenna? If not (bit too specific :p ) which wireless adsl router could i use?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Don't base your choice of ISP on what free kit they give you. Darn - AOL give out a "free" Netgear WiFi router... but wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. So pick a decent ISP, and then pick a decent router. (Plenty of threads on this. Personal choice is D-Link, Linksys, Netgear as all decent and usually detachable aerials)

Here are a few sites to check out about using all kinds of kitchen kit to improve your signal. (though some of these seem to be off line at the moment.. a bit odd... I do have an 8MB zip file of all the piccys from freeantennas if you want to email me... look in trust info for my details.)

Thanks for the info, i will probably use the Netgear ANT24D18 18dBi Directional Antenna for signal boost as this is going to need a lot of power over about 1/4mile.

some of the examples on freeantenane.com show signals being thrown over a long distance. Mainly by adding a dish behind the signal to boost it. (in the same way a satelite dish aerial works)

ahhh i see, nice idea :)
Has anybody had any experience with actually doin something similar to this? I would like to know what they thought of the performance, response times, speeds etc.
Cheers :)

Nice and cheap and simple to attempt. Have tried it on a couple of setups. Helped a bit.

Does that AOL email address in your trust work? And do you want 8MB of piccys sent ya?

I would love the pics, unfortunately im on 64k, would take me 20mins per pic :( .
I found this modem :D-Link DSL-G624T 54Mbps Wireless ADSL2+ router, which has a detachable reverse sma antenna but it is ADSL2+, would this still work with ADSL?
Also can i pick up the signal from this antenna using my standard belkin pre-n wireless card or do i need anything special to be installed at my end?
Thanks :)

That D-Link router is a very nice bit of kit. And ADSL2+ is backwards compatible so will work fine (and is ready for the future)

As to 64k... ouch... I feel your pain. Pipex messed up with one of my customers the other day and broke his broadband pipe for a week. You should have seen the fun of trying to get a Printing Company to operate over 56k dialup for that week!! Ouch. (Though we were sneaky enough with this backup connection that the customers hardly noticed... hehehe)

If you get a speedy conenction somewhere, or once you are on broadband, post back in this thread and remind me to send you the piccys. :)

Ouch indeed
I have been reading about this netgear antenna and it sounds a bit disappointing, so i am thinking more towards the d-link 21db grill antenna.
I just need some info on setting it up and where it should be placed (combining performance with ease of installation).
And if it is possible to bring the signal to my house and then share it out again via the router in my house.
Cheers
:)

MAllen, I couldn't be cheeky and request the pictures to the email in my trust, could I?

Okay... after NTL bombing the email out at 85% uploaded, I have hosted the zip file of these pictures for a few days.

Note that these are the property of http://www.freeantennas.com/ and once I see their site is back, I'll be deleting this zip. (It will probally be deleted after a few weeks anyway....)

Kitchen kit as WiFi aerial boosters

Have fun... and don't let the girlfriend/wife/mother know what you are doing with the colander :D
