Look inside for something AMAZING

I know this may sound silly but... why are they building all these Skyscrapers?

There's what... 2m people in the whole of the UAE? There must be more office space than office workers over there surely.

For apartments? So they can rent it out to people going on a holiday as dubai has LOADS of tourists these days.

On topic: I bet you the other towers around their just look epic fail compared it to. lol

Having seen it for real a few months ago I can honestly say it's the most amazing building I've ever seen. It just dwarfs everything else totally. From a distance it doesn't look real and from up close it's just mind blowing.

Can't wait till I go back next year :D

Because they can.

the Prince of Dubai (or King, or Sultan, or whatever is it) basically said he wants to build outragous things to get Dubai on the map. Theres already the crazy Islands they have built out to sea, and the 7 star hotel. They basically want to be the best.

Thats not really what he said!!
He said that he understands that the oil that has made them filthy rich will eventually run out and that to secure the financial future of the UAE they need to look elsewhere.
Tourism is where he see's them making money in the future hence why they are building all these amazing attractions/hotels.

I wonder how fast the lifts are in this thing, there has to be an express lift straight from the top to bottom

I'm pretty sure that lift technology isn't advanced enough to have them going from the bottom all the way to the top. I'd guess that you'd have to get multiple lifts up to the top.

you should have posted some pics....that place looks amazing

Still a little way to go as well. Current height is about 690m - final height including the spire is around 830m. Although I'm not sure if they've released the actual finished height yet?

Its nice to see civil engineers (real engineers, not computer technicians or boiler fitters:p) in a good light for once:)
Last time I heard of engineers on TV they were moaning about that bridge that fell down in america.

That building is very impressive, the architect who designed that had big ambitions!

What a waste of money.......but when your sole GDP is going out the window each year what else can you do, Tourism.

I must admit its great to see something like this but give me New York any day of the week, what history is there in Duabi, I might as well fly to New York then to Las Vegas then back to New York and see more history and artificial crap to last me a life time, Dubia looks amazing but its priced its self out and being a muslim state its I could never feel relaxed.

A true piece of engendering, you can throw money at something but it never ever will have class and will have no History.

The words shopping and spending pointless money comes to mind

thats the whole point isnt it though

too hot
strict laws
expensive

despite that i would still love to go there and see some of the stuff in person

They couldn't have just put the extra effort in, built it another 200m higher and have it 1 km could they :p

Absolutely epic piece of engineering, hats off to the builders, you wouldn't see me do their job!

How many years was it between those two pictures ?

10 years ago the highest building was the trade center and that's no bigger than your average council tower block.
