My friend has a Golf 4 1.4 and yes it's ridiculously slow but if you're content with having a hair dryer for an engine then I really see the problem.
Leon 1.4s will be very cheap and therefore relatively good value for money, coupled with low insurance.
OP: take one for a test drive and if it is too slow for you, move on.
