or shall i go for a honda civic sport at £8000ish for a 2004 model ? cheaper to run, cheaper to insure?

206 gti?
saxo vts and insure tpft?

honestly dont know what to go for? basically want something quick, the cheaper it is to run the better, good quality car with some cred :) gimmie some options guys im stuck :P and i cant have anything that will cost more to insure than a 172, dont really wanna be spending more than £2k on insurance :(

The Clio is the quickest of the cars you've named.

Why don't you get a mk1? Cheaper to buy, faster, cheaper to insure...

not fussed on the interior (dashboard is foul), and i would rather spend £2k more and get the facelift model and 2ish years newer.

But a £3000ish 172 insuring it on TPFT does sound tempting (but whats realiablility like on 60+k mile 172?)

The 206gti is dull unless its the 180bhp version.

Saxo vts is meant to be a lot of fun but can you put up the the bad rep they have amongst the motoring community.

If you can afford it the Clio 172 will put a smile on your face a lot more than any of the other cars you have mentioned.

FSH and you cant really go far wrong, servicing costs are reasonable and petrol is decent.

If you go for the cheaper option with an early one make sure the cambelt has been done. It should be done @ the 70k service or at 5 years. It is a expensive experience having the cambelt done.

I had a 2002 172 and would love another but insurance companies rape me due to my ban and I just couldn't afford the servicing/petrol costs involved.

Awesome car!

i know the 206gti is slower (the 137bhp model) but this is reflected in a cheaper insurance £1200, whereas the 180bhp model is £1800. But ive been told that the the 206gti 137bhp is a good little fun car that handles well, which appeals to me.

I am swaying towards the 172, but id like to hear what other people have to say and what other alternatives are out there. 1 thing thats putting me off a 172 is to the untrained eye, it looks like any other clio really except with the alloys etc. Might go for a test drive on a couple today nothing else better to do :)

By that rationale the 206gti looks like any other 206 except the alloys etc ;)

Even the 180 206 won't touch a 172. Certainly not in the handling stakes.

recommended car then? what sort of price am i looking at to get the cambelt done on a 2002 facelift model then... and what are the servicing costs like?

gonna go for some testdrives now, never been for a test drive before. How do you go about it, just show interest then ask for a testdrive, ask for a testdrive straight out? wait for the salesman to ask you?

I dont wanna be cheeky and ask him outright, and dont wanna look like an idiot when he says - no lol

So how do u go about it then?

think the cambelt costs around 600 quid if i remember?

the 36k mile service is the aux belt

The Clio 172 is a great car to drive if you ignore the crap quailty interior, very quick after 4000rpm, can outrun a lot of flashy cars like Mercs and BMWs quite easy

Spend 5 mins looking at it and ask for a test drive, if he says no, just go somewhere else or feel highly offended :p

Back now, just dont know if i want a 172. Only seen 2!, 1 was a Y reg minging thing thats been done up. And i seen a sold 182 which looked alright. And thats all they had in 2 renault garages.

Seen 3 mini coopers and im swaying towards them - look retro as hell, appeals a lot to me. Didnt take it for a testdrive though wish i had.

At the garage where the 3 minis were parked up i was talking to the guy that owned it, next to his F430! stunning!

Then as we were walking out of the garage he switches the engine on and pulls out and slams his foot down, hell of a noise. Recorded it with my phone :)

Cambelt for me was 300 with full cam kit (120 alone) from a specilist.

I paid £500 for cam kit change and 36k service along with a couple of other little bits.

check out www.cliosport.net

if you have a look in the forsale section there are a lot of 172/182's at very good prices. The guys on there will also be able to tell you what to look out for when buying a 172/182 :)
