Looking at getting a clio 172

What are the insurance groups for the 172 mk1, 172 mk2, and 182. Also what are the BHP/engine sizes/0-62 times etc differences between the 172 mk1 and 172 mk2?

cheers

all grp 16, cups and trophys every so slightly more to insure I think people have found.

All around the same 0-62 times, the mk2 standard 172 is the slowest of the lot though.

I think the difference in speed between the 172 cup and 182 isn't huge (well it's not between any of them really). Mk1 is the best in terms of kit to weight ratio, you get nice seats air con and abs over the 172 cup and it's not much heavier.

Engines same size, power figures are in the names :)

But still group 16 though

Looks like its going to be about another 4 years wait til i can afford the insurance on that kind of machine...and by then the Clio 1172 will probably be out by then :( :( :(

Nto tthat bad, loads on here have had high grp cars at that age, I was 20 I think when I had my grp 15, just have to shop around (and save up :P )

For what your paying for a 172, you are getting a lot of car. Xenons, autolights/wipers, half leather alcantara seats and the amazing engine and handling. Get one.

They are very old cars now which require proper looking after - ask any 'Valver' (that name really annoys me, i mean OMG IT HAS VALVES but meh) enthusiast and they'll admit they need care.

Which is fine, but means it isnt that good a Clio 172 alternative.

Mint

but whats realiablility like on 60+k mile 172?

In my experience, shocking. Had mine since last december, and I've already had to have a new exhaust (at £300) and a new gearbox (at £800) :(

And almost all have now, or are about to, fall apart. Clio 172 a far better bet.

Fall apart? :/

That's not really fair. If a car has been looked after, then I don't see a problem with it. Yes, they can be seen as common ragged cars, but there are certainly some mint ones.

If you were not a particular Valver enthusiast, why would you chose to forgo a Clio 172 in favour of that?

Much cheaper, just as fast

Less likely to lose money come resale time.

Clio 172's are dropping in price by the month, why you think theres so many for sale........Its because people dont want to hold onto them and really se there hard earned go down the pan come resale time.

Many of them are pushing 12-15 years old and were originally good value, small French hatchbacks. It's no shame that after 12-15 years they are finally beginning to, well, show their age, no matter how well looked after.

If you are a particular enthusiast for Valvers then sure, this isnt an issue.

But if you merely want a great hot hatch, a Clio 172 is just.. better?

I'll give you one thing, I also hate the term Valver :p

However, its like any car -they need looking after. I don't think Renault cars require more looking after than any other car.

Get a 172 if you want to spend lots of money replacing things and then watch the car be worth almost bugger all come resale time.

Go for it

I am not comparing a 1.8 16v to a 172 at all. Obviously the 172 will come top, although insurance and cost wise, a 16v might be something to consider. :)

A good friend of mine, Matteh just recently purchased one. Fantastic car and certainly looked after.

My mates 2002 172 hasnt been particularly reliable either, fortunatly it was bought used from a dealer and covered under warrenty but it was fairly serious problems. At 60k and parts of the trim are starting to fall off and it has a few rattles.
