Looking at getting a clio 172

Golf (97-04) will be model to consider.

No, not at all. There is no true hot hatch in the Mk4 Golf range - at best there is a competent fast cruiser in the R32, but thats about it. The GTI itself was particularly embarrasing - something even the head of VW admitted when the Mk5 GTI was launched.

There are others such as the V5 which is a second slower to 60 however IG15. If you would like the diesel route, there is the 150 bhp diesel TDI which can be remaped to around 170-180 bhp which will be 7 seconds to 60.

found a 206 gti, 66kmiles, 2001 x reg, f(peugeot)sh, 2 previous owners, lovely condition.

£3500

Was serviced 6k miles ago. But hasnt had a the cambelt changed yet. Should this have been changed? when does it need changing? and how much am i looking for that to set me back to get it changed to be on the safe side?
I have never owned a car with more than 30k miles on the clock!

Thank you

Dean

They aren't too bad - price seems abit cheap. That's probably reflecting the cam belt. Am guessing 70k they need replacing. Performance is not too bad. (0-60 around 8 seconds)

Discounted a 172 because of problems but going for a 206, I've heard about nothing but problems with those (done research as the other half wants one)!

The thing is every hot hatch is going to have problems if it is driven like a hot hatch. Its very rare to find a 1 lady owner never caned hot hatch. Some of the problems are generic but a lot are through the way they are driven.

Driven both the 172 and the 206 gti and I must say the renault is far more fun :)
Feels far more poised, feedback from the steering and brakes is a lot better too.

Was initialy looking for something with more grunt myself than my daily driver, but insurance was crippling with my licence only being held for three years, a fault accident and a speeding conviction.
So I went down the kit car route, quote for my R1 powerd MK Indy is £185 fully comp for a year limmited to 5k miles and including breakdown cover, not bad for something that will do 62 in 3.5 seconds :)

Gearboxes are fine if treated properly, one of the guys who knows these cars inside and out for his business has said that the boxes are fine it's the drivers lol.

I'd disagree there. If the boxes are fine, why are there are FAR more cases of gearbox failure with 172s than other comparative hot hatches? They are simply not robust enough.

I'm only quoting a guy who is supposedly in the know :)
