Looking at getting a PS3; few simple questions

PSN games are a step above wiiware games, some of them are pure quality. Annoyingly not all have demos but you can come on here and get peoples opinions.

Just had a quick bash on Crysis scaled down to 1024x768 and it looked fine, no screen tearing etc. Like I've said, the monitor is only a temporary solution anyway. Another mildly stupid question: can the PS3 be stood on its side without needing a stand? I've only ever seen them lying down.

As above, I'm thinking of buying a PS3 and have a couple of questions.

1/ What cables do they come with? I know that you need an HDMI cable seperately, but do you get the HD cables in the box or the SD red yellow and white cables?

Standard old skool cable, don't use it.

Buy a hdmi cable when you get your new tv, but don't spend more than a fiver on a HDMI.

2/ Does the included controller come with the cable required for charging it up? Do controllers that are bought seperately come with these, or do they need to be bought seperately? Are they just USB2 cables?

Yup it does.

For other controllers buy a usb->usb mini cable for a few quid of the ebay.

3/ Is online play free (ie no Xbox Live like subs)?

Oooo yes, and the system is much better now after many updates.

4/ I'm looking at connecting it to my 19' 1400x900 DVI monitor. Is the HDMI port in the back of the console a standard or proprietary port? If it is standard, is the best way of connecting to a monitor to simply buy a DVI-HDMI cable?

Yup hdmi->dvi

5/ Is there any/much difference in quality between the official and unofficial PS3 HDMI cables? I always try to buy official peripherals where possible, but if there is not much difference the extra tenner doesn't look worth it!

Nope, HDMI cables all produce the same image, it either works, breaks up with errors all over the shop, or doesn't work at all. Pricey HDMI cables have a huge markup for a name and sometimes better build quality. Stick with cheap cable and buy 2 for under a tenner, and always have 1 spare.

EDIT: 6/ Would it be possible to connect my amp and speakers to it? If so, how?

What sort of amp, stereo ?

I think like someone else mentioned you might be able to use hdmi to your monitor then the old white and red cables on the composite cable included to go to your amp. Haven't tested it myself, and I use HDMI to the tv, then I use the RCA outputs from my tv to my stereo amp.

Thought I would bring this back up rather than starting a new thread. I'm now half thinking about buying new rather than pre-owned, and have a couple more questions. Mainly, what is the difference between the 40GB PS3 and the 80GB PS3 (apart from the size of the drive!)? I hear conflicting things online; some say that the 80GB has backwards compatibility, smaller die process, more USB ports, media card readers, and some vehemently deny this. What's the right answer?

The difference between 40 and 80 is the hard drive size and the inclusion of the DualShock 3 controller. That's it. Whether one or t'other has a smaller die is not really relevant. It doesn't overheat like the 'other one'.

It was the 60 that had BC, 4xUSB, media card readers and is no longer available to buy at retail.

If your buying new, the 80gb doesn't have any of the extras you've listed.

AFAIK it's pretty much the same as the 40gb apart from the drive.

Remember you can upgrade the drive very easily yourself to a much bigger capacity. :)
