Looking at upgrading

Currently on:
  • Asus Rampage Extreme X48
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
  • Corsair 667Mhz DDR3 dual channel 8GB
  • Crucial M4
  • Gigabyte GTX460

Will probably end up staying with the same graphics card for the time being.

However, looking at getting:

  • NZXT Phantom (White with red)
  • Intel i7-4771 (Haswell)
  • Not sure on motherboard. Was looking at H87 but there doesn't seem to be great choice. Given I won't be overclocking, do I really need a Z87?
  • Similarly not too sure on memory, maybe Patriot Venom Red 16GB 1866MHz
  • Samsung 840 Pro SSD (128GB)

I'll also be changing out my data hard drives. For storage are WD Greens a good choice? My current ones sound like they're coming to the end of their lives.

Cheers

What is your rig being used for?

Is it a gaming machine/work or just general use?

Do you do any video editing or CAD (or other noteworthy programs)?

Mobile dev, C++ programming, Vectorworks, occasional Lightroom & Photoshop use. (Hence not upgrading the GPU).

I want to get back into gaming though as I haven't done it for a while but will make do with the current GPU.

Spec:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4771 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £239.99
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel kit (PV316G160C0K) £119.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £86.99
1 x Gigabyte H87-HD3 Intel H87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £80.99
1 x Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Windowed Case - Black £69.95
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler £26.99
Total : £624.89 (includes shipping : FREE).

Changed the case, as a £100 case is a bit much, as you don't need great cooling..

The EVO SSD is £7 more and a lot faster

CPU cooler just to keep temps and noise down (you can stick with stock if you wish).

I likes that :) though I think maybe a case without a window would be better suited to the op, like the 550D or of that like as I'm sure he doesn't want to hear the thing... just my 2 cents

The case is for looks. Absolutely love the look of that NZXT Phantom. Hopefully I'll get a couple of quid back by selling my Coolermaster Cosmo S. We'll see.

One thing I forgot to say. I have a CPU water cooling loop, so I'll also get a new block for that. I also have a whole load of these fans which are super silent so not worried about noise.

Cheers so far!

Fair enough, having a custom loop makes the phantom a better choice overall..

though it does beg the question why are you not over locking when you have such a great cooling system?

So would you suggest potentially getting the i7-4770k with a Z87 board?

Or would you even suggest going to Ivybridge? (I've read Haswell isn't as great at overclocking).

I'd suggest Haswell still, even though Ivy does overclock better you'll still get better overall performance out of haswell..

Under water you can throw more voltage at it so you should get a better overclock anyway.

I'd suggest this spec:

1 x NZXT Phantom 410 Enthusiast Midi Tower Case - Black/White £84.95

I have chosen faster RAM as the board now supports it, it will help speed up rendering time. :)

Also stulid did a review on that motherboard: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18518312
