At the time, when I first got it, it was a new experience and I was motivated to play it but towards the middle and the end it got repetitive and one began to see the flaws in the game, which were pretty annoying. Enemies spawning behind you again and again and again got so boring. The moody darkness didnt bother me much it added to the atmosphere.
One thing you can do if you can, is now compare doom3 to quake4. They are both on the same engine, and there is far less spawning of enemies behind you. Plus towards the end quake4 has a really great part which I was just not expecting and reminded me of something that would happen in a half-life game.
I think though ultimately it was the engine that let these games down. The graphics are too much like plastic, humans seem to all look the same and look plastic, and areas were overly complicated with textures (some noticeably low res) but still didnt look fantastic, and brought your fps down in a large area with many baddies.
Doom3 didnt remind me of the older doom games. I remember in the original doom there was little to no story, no pda or whatnot, but it was still miles fun, because levels did not revolve around following a bunch of corridors and killing spawning enemies. Rather there was an element of problem solving, secret paths and platforms, and there was even secret levels! There were also times when you didnt stick around to kill everything in sight, you just ran to the exit. In doom3, I found if you didnt kill everything, then you couldnt progress to the next bit. The PDA with the numbers was pointless because the safes just had some ammo or whatever, cant remember a mega health, and definitely no secret paths/levels.
