Looking for 750Gb or 1Tb external storage, which is the best one to go for

Western Digital MyBook2 Home
Seagate Freeagent Pro

or something else?

Looking for speed so the drive will need to have an eSata connection.
Whats best value for money and reliability?

I like the WB My Books as I have stated in every thread that asks.

I use the ESATA as USB2 aint too fast.

How does Esata compare to your internal drive.... same or slower?

I am also currently erring on the WD side. Do you know if the spec of the drive in the 750Gb Home edition.... seek time / cache.

I don't have the drive but eSATA is basically an internal SATA connection put externally (hence the "e") so there should be no difference in speed or negligible difference.

Unfortunately the WD website doesn't tell you which model of drive it uses but I'd assume an AAKS because they are the cheapest retail.

I may be asking a dumb question here but what is AAKS?

Sorry, it is the name for the model line. WD have several different model lines which are aimed at slightly different markets - AAKS is the one for ordinary desktop performance. Which probably means you'd get this drive but I don't know that for certain.

I think i'm going to pickup the Seagate Freeagent Pro 1TB as it can be had for a reasonable £140inc and has a 5 year warranty. Has eSATA and all that jazz too. :)

Cheers for the info. Cost is of essense so it may have to be a 750Gb drive over a 1Tb :(... I like the design of the WD and that fact I can have it upright or on it's side. It does have 3 years warranty and by then I reckon I'll have moved onto something bigger better and faster..

Although 140inc does seem a fantanstic price for an external 1Tb drive.... hmmmmmm..

I have the WD My Book Studio 750gb for my mac. (should perform the same for pc except im using firewire 800) Just plug it in and leave it. It shuts down when you shut down your computer. Shuts down when your computer goes to sleep. Powers up when your computer powers up or wakes from sleep. And looks good to.

Cheers, reckon I'll go for the Mybook Home 750gb. Neither of my Pc's or my laptop have Firewire and besides if I have eSATA then I reckon i can get by without having the Firewire 800 option.

:)

As fast as an internal.
