I'm in a kind of reminiscing mood at the moment. I'm trying to find some books I studied for GCSE English about seven years ago. One of them was "An Inspector Calls" but I can't remember what the other one was.

Our teachers had a choice of three set texts and my teacher chose "An Inspector Calls" and this other book.

I'll attempt to describe it in the hope someone knows what the book was called or who it was by.

Right, a widower lives with his son in this big country house. The widower employs a young widow to be his servant/maid. The widow also has a son the same age, roughly, as the widower's son. The two parents try to get their sons to get to know each other but it doesn't work as the maid's son bullies his mother's boss' son.

Eventually the man and the maid "fall in love" and decide to get married. When the man's son finds out he gets bullied again by the other son and ends up killing himself.

Not the best description I know but I remember really liking this book. I just can't find anything anywhere on exam board's set texts lists that gives me any hints. I know the other book was "Of Mice And Men". Ironic that I remember the book I didn't read.

So if anyone has any thoughts on what the book is called or who the author was then I'd be most grateful.:)

Of Mice and Men is a hell of a book

I reccomend it - Wow, im 17

"Well,' said George, 'we'll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we'll just say the hell with goin' to work, and we'll build up a fire in the stove and set around it an' listen to the rain comin' down on the roof..."

Oh dears..

Really is a very good book, the film is awesome aswell

The ending is oh so sad though

Personally I'm not a big fan of Of mice and men. I always found it sad that considering we were studying for a GCSE in English literature that a piece of American literature was one of the set texts. Especially considering the wealth of exceptional English literature available.

"I'm the King of the Castle" by Susan Hill. Superb.
