Hello OCUK,
I am in the business of searching for a broadband package to cover internet + the telephone + TV

I am located in London, NW if that plays any factor.

I am unsure about two things when deciding what package to choose from on this site:
http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/

  • What is an appropriate download speed?
  • What is an appropriate download limit per month? I occasionally download songs and from time to time a non HD movie. I play some FPS video games as well.

If you have any recommendations on packages, I would love to hear them!

Thank you!
Robert

Are you in a cable area? how far from your local telephone exchange are you? these questions must first be answered before anyone can really help you. As youll find Virgin/Sky the cheapest for a bundle deal. But depends where about in NW London you are i guess

Thank you. I will take a look.

Any other opinions?

My current download/upload speed seems tosh and I believe we pay quite a high rate to AOL every month

For Telephone Number 02077224376 on Exchange PRIMROSE HILL

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 6.5Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 5.5Mbps and 8Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 12Mbps; typically the line speed would range between 7Mbps and 17Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1Mbps and downstream line speed of 12Mbps; typically the downstream speed would range between 7Mbps and 17Mbps.

So is it worth upgrading! ?

It's worth upgrading. The BT site says your cabinet will get FTTC before 2012, which will bring you 40mb speeds (slowly upgrading to 80mb). I would be tempted to get BT Total broadband and call up for a free upgrade to Infinity when it's ready (Total Package 3 -> Infinity Package 2).

You should also check on the Virgin website, to see if you can receive their fibre optic broadband, which is 50mb, or 100mb if you're lucky enough.

However if you want to stick with normal ADSL broadband (should see 7mb~17mb depending on wiring and distance from exchange), I would consider looking at either O2, Be or Sky. All three have brilliant broadband service.

EDIT: Your last post is showing your phone number to the public... I'm sure you don't want anyone to see that do you? ;)

If you can get BE, go with them, they are amazing as an ISP, and speed is good too! Also bare in mind they are planning FTTC services also.

Your cabinet is planned to have WBC FTTC by 31st December 2011. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 32.9Mbps and upstream line speed of 13.3Mbps.

:)

Sky and Virgin would probably be the best all in one options of home phone, broadband and tv. If you split tv with one of them and go broadband with BT it will be at a much higher monthly cost. I'm with Sky, we were paying BT £40 a month and that has effectively gone down to £20 a month with Sky. No virgin available here!

Thanks. Is ASDL significantly cheaper than getting an upgraded broadband plan that you have mentioned above?

BE just does broadband and I was hoping to get a telephone/TV/broadband package.

Thanks. So you recommend going all for Sky?

Depends on the package you're looking at. Right now my parents are paying for phone and broadband with BT for nearly £40 a month. BT Infinity is the same price so litterally a free upgrade. With BT Vision added on the bundle is only a couple of more pounds.

Looking at Sky the price seems similiar as well, so if you want phone/TV/broadband look at Sky or BT. Sky should give between 7mb ~ 17mb. BT will be the same initially, but once the cabinet (green box on the road) gets upgraded you should see 40mb (or 80mb depending on the profile BT sticks you on). As for TV I don't really know which one offers the better deal.

remember there is no fup with sky broadband, it really is unlimited. also, if you go for the package then anytime+ is excellent, it streams stuff to your hd box and really does add some extra value. However, be warned that you need to have your exchange enabled for sky llu because otherwise it's far more expensive and not unlimited...

Hm so the decision lies between Sky and BT it seem!

you still do have a fup with BT, last time I looked it doesn't apply between 12pm and 7am. FTTC is available in some areas already. I guess the difference is in the tv side, as that will make the biggest difference overall...

Sky is something like £45 for tv/24mb unlimited...so like I said, it depends on what the tv package is giving you really....
