Looking for a 'build your own' kit

Looking for a build your own kit that would be worth while and can be used once made. I've found a build your own robot arm but it seems a little simplistic and for kids. This is going to be a gift for my dad who is pretty good at building things so can be quite complicated.

Anyone had or done something like this? Any ideas of where to look?

This can be anything but as he already rebuilds engines one of those build your own V8 engine kits wouldn't be worth it

They look stunning! Slightly expensive though...

Having said that my dad has a couple of old steam engines that must have been expensive when he got them 30years ago, they look the same quality!
