Looking for recommendations on a good monitor. Budget between £800-£1300, give or take.

Mainly planning on using this for work, watching videos, and gaming.

I mainly play Real-time Strategy - AoE, Starcraft 2, Spell force 3 (when it's out). Generally not an FPS gamer although I do play some Far Cry Primal and some RPGs. So refresh may not be that important.

Would love something with
  1. high resolution - 4k-ish and beyond.
  2. great colours and gamut.
  3. Size over 27". 30+ would be ideal.
  4. Gsync if possible - how critical is it at 4k 60Hz if you're running of a GTX 1080? (I could SLI up on this if needed.)
Good refresh would be great too, but in this specs I'm thinking it will be hard to get over 60 Hz.

I take it, there aren't any HDR monitors available yet? Planning to purchase this in January but can wait a bit if better options are not far off.

My current selection is this Dell UltraSharp UP3216Q 31.5":

Is there anything out there better? I had a look at the LG UltraFine 5K Display but I'm unsure as to whether this is a true 10-bit.

I've also had a look at curved displays such as Acer x34 but it looks like colours are poorer compared to the Dell. Also not sure if curved is helpful for watching video and RTS games.

This also looks attractive but OCUK page says 10-bit while the Acer page says 16.7M colours: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/acer...descreen-led-monitor-black-red-mo-099-ac.html How does it compare to the dell? I like that it has Gsync

The problem with 4K if you're looking at it for gaming is that all options are limited to 60Hz at present, and even a 1080 is not the mighty single 4K GPU solution we want it to be. Faster monitors are around the corner, and obviously the 1080Ti isn't far away either. That said, the outlay for both will be significant to say the least, so it depends what your budget is. G-Sync would be a necessity for sure. SLI is very hit and miss... some games don't support it at all, and plenty others are buggy. Prepare for some angst if you go that route.

The X34 and ultrawide in general is definitely an excellent middle-ground. It's certainly far easier to drive when it comes to gaming (about 40% less pixels than 4k). You're right the colours aren't spectacular on the X34, but the curve is no issue, and helps with immersion in all areas. The only time I'd say it might be an issue is if you were doing accurate Photoshop or CAD work, as straight lines may look a bit off.

Unfortunately, I would say your perfect monitor just isn't available yet. Whatever you go with, you will be compromising in one area or another. So if you can't wait to see what next year brings, you just need to decide what is the MOST important factor(s) for you in a monitor, as that will ultimately dictate your choice.

Thanks, guys.

Not too worried about GPU horsepower. I may just go with a Titan (Pascal) for now.

After reading this review http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/acer-predator-xb321hk-uhd-monitor,review-33619.html

I've narrowed it down to:
  1. Acer 4k2k 321hk. Apparently it is a 10 bit panel https://www.overclockers.co.uk/acer...descreen-led-monitor-black-red-mo-099-ac.html
  2. Dell Ultrasharp 3216q given its 87% coverage of DCI-P3 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/dell...-led-4k-monitor-midnight-black-mo-085-de.html

The Dell has better colour gamut but the Acer has Gsync and better response time. Anyone have any opinions on the material difference in the colour gamut vs how critical response time and gsync are likely to be?

I think that's probably the best 2 options you have, doubt you'll go wrong with either :)

I myself went the UW route and now have the LG 38UC99 which is bloody bloody awesome! :D

I'd lean towards to the Dell of the two... better gamut as you say, and also will be a better build quality and Dell are easier to deal with CS wise than Acer. The GSync on the Acer makes it a harder call though. If you will be gaming regularly (more so with demanding games), then perhaps it does swing back towards the Acer. It will make a difference in games that really tax the GPU.
