Hey guys,

I'm looking for a compact mirrorless camera as a second camera to my D5100 - to take to gigs and to carry around in general when I don't want to take my bigger camera; something that'd fit in a coat pocket would be ideal.

I have a budget of £350.

I'm edging towards the Nikon J1 at the moment as it is small, within my price range and produces great images but a downside I've found is that it does not have the ability to select the focus point of an image (though I'm not sure how big of a deal this is or how intelligent the auto system is).

I've also seen other high-end cameras without interchangeable lenses such as the Lumix LX5 which seems to have good reviews but I am not sure how this sort of camera would stack up against the mirrorless interchangeable lens market.

Can anyone provide me with an insight into the above?

The Nikon 1 camera are the best performing of the EVIL camera in regards to responsiveness adn auto focus, which is one of the main limitations of EVIL cameras so this IMO makes it one of he best contenders.

But all the EVIL cameras have pros and cons. At the moment, there is a limited lens choice for the Nikon 1 system because it is the newest. However, what the Nikon 1 does really well is allow mounting of almost all nikon F-mount lenses so you hve a back catalog of 50 years of optical greatness. The AF-S lenses focus surprisingly fast on the Nikon 1 camera, so much so that a lens like the Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 makes foa magnificent wildlife-life setup (520mm at f/2.8). Even with a TC on you can use these lenses effectively. The Sony Nex in theory allows the other sony alpha lenses to be mounted and AF, but the performance is pretty dire in comparison.

The m43 camera have the most complete system but they have made very little progress in the last years and the sensor, AF and responsiveness is lagging behind. on the plus side they have been finely tuned through several generations and have a wider native lens choice.
