hi ..

I'am in the market for a new a/v amp as my old Sony STR-DB 1080 as died on me , so i started looking around .

Price point 300-350 ish

Was really keen on the Onkyo TXNR616 , but iam finding reports all over the net regarding hdmi issues .. an firmware problems , so it's kinda putting me off .

So what iam asking is there anyone just bought/or have one these amps , an do you have or had any issues ??

The other amp iam looking at is the Sony STR-DN1030 , not quite the same spec as the onkyo but seems to have no major issues i can find ..

any advice/help or other suggestions would be helpful please ...

thx ..

I've had the Onkyo 414/515/616 and they all had handshaking issues that I could not deal with. I also tried the Denon AVR-2113 but I had handshake issues with this too.

I now have the Yamaha RX-V673 and it's been flawless. It's over your price budget unfortunately but I don't regret spending the extra £100 on it.

The STR-DN1030 is a great amplifier too from what I've heard, no harm in trying it, just make sure you're going to be buying from a retailer with good customer service just incase any issues arise!

hi ... most of the issues i've read about the onkyo is what you describe , seems to be from 2012 - to march this year then no more posted ,

most ppl around then talk about the last firmware upgrade they applied , some had issues doing that aswell .. then nothing ..

was wondering if onkyo had sort the problems ??

i was looking at the Yamaha RX-V737 aswell but that seems to have disppeared now aswell as the extra cash i had to take up the 500 mark :(

When I got in touch with Onkyo they weren't too helpful, so I contacted the retailer I purchased from (Richer Sounds) and they told me they've had a lot of returns on the Onkyo sets and that there is no fix for it as of yet (this was a few months ago however, not sure what the case is now).

They gladly offered to take my Onkyo back and even gave me the Yamaha at cost price for all the inconvenience. It seems that finding an Onkyo 2012 amp onwards without HDMI handshake issues is as hard as finding a needle in a haystack.

Have you considered the YAMAHA RX-V475 by any chance? It's currently £350 and doesn't seem to be a bad AV receiver at all.

What requirements are you looking for from the amp?

specs iam looking for :

4-5+ hdmi at least, more the better ..

full HD audio support DTS master an true DD (do have a Blu ray player)

i have 6.1 speakers , so i need support for that ..

rear connections support banana plugs ..
not bothered about 3D pass thu ..

Network Support as in RJ45 connection at least..

also being able to use Ipad for controller with d/loadable app ..

1080p upscaling on the video for my PVR an DVD would be nice ..

I guess that's the 475 out of the question then as it only supports 5.1

I think your best bet here is the STR-DN1030 mate

well i suppose i could mug my mum for the extra an get the Yamaha 673 as its only 429 @ richersounds , as it seems to be the only one besides the onkyo that fits my needs ..

just a pity about the onkyo with all them hdmi's has issues ..

do u use the ios app by any chance ?

:D

Nope mate, although I have an android device, but regardless don't use the app at all, I prefer using the amp remote :P

thx for ya help ..

just one quick Q :

does your yamaha allow signal pass thru to the tv say from a dvd thats connected to it , when its powered off ? so say on a nite you want to watch a dvd but don't need the amp ON it 'll let you watch on the TV or does the amp always have to be on ?

Yep it does, you can set it to pass through whichever source was used last or assign a specific hdmi source :).

That's one of the issues I had with onkyo, the pass through never worked, I always had to switch the amp back on for the HDMI board to pass through, no such issues with the Yamaha :p

I had a Onkyo 609 and a couple of Yamaha receivers and a Sony before I bought a Pioneer LX53, it was easily better. I have since upgraded again to Anthem and now have the Pioneer for sale. Buying used will get you a lot more for your money.

Hi El1te

just a heads up m8 .. i went with the Yamaha 673 got it sat afternoon from richer .

spent sat nite an sun playing ;) up too now i'am really impressed , thx for the pointer ..

Gary .

Is there anything in the price range of the 414 that is as good? The handshake between it and my HTPC fails about one time in ten and an EDID override hasn't helped.

Nice one Gary, let me know if you have any questions about the settings.
