Looking for a new CPU

Hello, looking for a new CPU for my new rig. Its a build for music production/light gaming. I am torn between 2 at current prices.

Looking at some benches and there doesn't appear to be much between the 2, with the 12900kf edging it slightly, so performance to £ its going to the be the 14600k.

The system will be paired with DDR5 32gb 6000mhz so many of the great deals on DDR4 only CPU's are not of interest.

Max budget is £300, anything better to consider?

Currently leaning towards the 14600k also it being the latest gen, any further thoughts?

Do you already have an LGA 1700 board?

Why not look at the new Core Ultra series or AM5?

Not that threes anything wrong with both those CPU's you listed, But if budget allows why not get the latest.

You are 100% correct, I didn't even know about the ultra series, a bit embarrassed about that.

Looks like the 245K is quite a bit ahead of the aforementioned 2, roughly an extra 10%.

I did consider switching to AMD but nothing jumped out at me, I need to go back and do a bit more digging though.

Cheers for your help!!

Is your existing rig incapable of doing those tasks? Why would you think a new system is needed for music production and light gaming?

The main reason is my CPU will not be supported by windows 11. There does appear to be ways around this but my system is now pretty old anyway. I get by with what I have but it does struggle at times.

Try a debloated de TPM install, worth a shot. The one I use has reduced resource and memory usage, about 85 processes.

If you have a spare HD try it out on that.

The ISO image is 2.7GB :)

For your usage look at some reviews of the core ultra, production wise they would be a huge uplift especially over your existing cpu.

Are stock intel stock coolers still awful? If it even comes with one.

No cooler included, just checked.

This would have to go down as a major consideration, thank you very much.

If I did jump to AMD just looks like the Ryzen 7 7700 is the one?

yup so many issues with Intel.

I use a 7700, had with it, a upgrade over my xeon 5670, uses less power, two more cores. Didn't time it but music conversion was quicker.

pretty cheap as well I got it for around £150

The 245K is pretty good for productivity, gaming performance is sketchier. I'd definitely go for one instead of the 14600K and you can get both cheap and expensive boards for Core Ultra CPUs now, according to what you want/need.

Unfortunately very few reviews on the newer non-K CPUs so far, but worth considering too.

Its probably between the 245K and the 7700, the recent issues with intel are concerning but the 245K looks like a better fit. Honestly though the info I got here has really helped to make the right choice, many thanks.

Mainly for producitivity I would suggest the 7900 is a better point of comparison overall than the 7700, though for gaming you'd get the 7700.

Weird why the 7900 is slower in games. I don't understand

Although if base and boost clocks are the same (I don't believe they are?) then why the difference?
Similar reason to the 7900X3D, I think, the 6x6 config is suboptimal for gaming compared to the 8x0 config in the 8 core CPUs. The average boost clock of the 8 core models are held a little higher too.
