Looking for a new MBP

Sometimes I'm using it all day, our data comes from all different sources and typically arrives on CD. I like the idea of being able to work on it anywhere, without worrying about carrying extra drives around. This week I have been typing up notes and haven't used the cd drive at all.

If I were to go for SSD and a normal hdd in there, would you recommend the 15 over the 13? Would fitting an Optibay invalidate my warranty? I can't find mention of that on their site.

Thanks :)

I think the general idea there is that you put it back to how it was before it arrived if you are sending it off to Apple. Technically yes, but otherwise no!

When I had my MBP open I removed the DVD drive to see how easy it would be and as long as you have the correct screwdrivers then it's nice and easy!

I will, eventually, get round to doing it. Also toying with the idea of using the DVD with my Mac Pro as well, so I can use the two drive bays for HDs!

Personally i'd get the 15" just because the CPU in them even the bottom one is mental and you can get the 1680x1050 screen which will definitely be my next upgrade (although that is in 2013!)

Last Monday my trusty MBP 15" model 3,1 (2.4GHz Santa Rosa, 4GB, SSD) snuffed it.

If it's running a 8600M GT then there is a possibility that one day you'll find the machine will not display anything.

I'm considering a 2011 MBP 15" however at the moment I have one month of contract to run and so it will have to wait - my mac mini (2.66 C2D, 8GB) is doing just fine at the moment.

I need mine to survive a bit longer :D I'm writing my thesis on it! It still seems okay, aside it feels a bit slow on the more intensive stuff, so hopefully I'm okay!

Having taken on board all said in this thread, and a bit of discussion with the parents (still seems right to run big purchases by them!), I have decided to go for the base 15" with the hi-res option. I've been so, so happy with my current MBP, that it makes sense to go for the newer version of the same laptop, but with a hi-res addition. Hopefully it's not too small! Then, if I still need more screen space, I can either an an ACD or a cheaper Dell later on :)

Annoyingly, it's Easter and I'm 200 miles from campus. Provided the MK store has them in stock, I think I'll put the extra £50~ on 3yr Apple Care to get it from there.

Also, I've been looking in to the glossy/anti-glare screens. My current one looks like this:

Is that the same as what a current glossy would be like?

Thanks for your input, everyone :)

Well everyone, thank you all for your input. I was in MK earlier so called in the Apple store for another look, and came home with this; an off-the-shelf base model 15" :)

I'll unpack it in the morning and add some photos to the gallery :)

Thank you! I've gone away with just my iphone camera, so I won't bother with photos until I'm home again.

It's soooooo so fast though :D
