looking for a new processor cooler

hey I'm new too this forum and I've been wanting a new cooler for a long time i haven't been using a stock cooler but at the same time i cant remember what one it is but would be a great cooler for the 1090t x6 processor also will be overclocking too 4.0ghz as it is at the moment but want a lower temp at full load which at the moment can vary from 50-60C

If you don't have a budget I would go for the NH-D14.

The silver arrow is cheaper though, and performs the same if not better that the NH. Keep that in mind.

The more important question is what RAM do you have?

These big coolers can interfere with RAM with large heat spreaders.

Maybe so however the silver arrow hits a point where it cannot dissipate any more heat (According to some reviewers) while the noctua can thus allowing higher voltages on chips that hit a heat wall before a voltage wall. That might not apply so much for a PII however it does apply to 1366 chips and possibly some chips in the future.

That's cause SA has a convex or bowed base where contact is mainly in the centre, thus it can't facilitate heat transfer faster. I have TR IFX-14 which is ancestor of SA and it had the same problem with convex base.

If SA is lapped then I am sure it will be able to transer even more heat faster. Check out my posts in IC Diamond test results thread to get a better perspective.

Got any lapping guides? Getting an SA and it sounds like I should lap it for even better performance.

thanks for the help i had been looking at the NH-D14 in the past but wanted to make sure that for the price i get the performance i mean im pleased with the temps and clocks i got with my one at the moment it only cost £15 but was hoping to push it further so this has helped me a lot

Not true. That particular reviewer is just an idiot. Xbitlabs found the SA to be better than the noctua even at higher clocks and I personally found both to be pretty much on par. Realistically no one is gonna take a quad core I7 9xx beyond 4.2ghz anyway. And since we're only dealing with an amd, it should more than cope.

Well this fellow OCUker had also similar issue with bowed/convex base of Silver Arrow.

Here is the contact picture of my IFX-14 bowed/convex base with Q6600 IHS (less contact):

Here is the washer modded lapped contact of IFX-14 base with Q6600 IHS (Both cpu and IFX-14 were lapped)

Place silver arrow on a flat surface and move it sideways gently. If it wobbles then you know base isn't flat. However if there is no movement or very small wobble, then your Silver Arrow base is pretty flat.

There was never a faulty batch. The reviewer in question just had problem installing his.despite how easy the mounting mechanism is. I know this because he was asking me.

ive been looking around at prices for the NH-D14 but ive also seen another cooler which is water cooling for £10 more http://www.******.com/product/234187 i wasnt too sure on the idea of water cooling and as i said wanted to stick to air but would it be worth it?

alright it wont show it on here but its the Corsair H70 Hydro Series CPU Cooler is it any good is the difference in temps a lot cooler for the h70?

The Silver Arrow destroys the H70.

i have researched into both the silver arrow and the NH-D1 it seems that the NH is the better cooler out of the 2 but you can add another fan on the other side of them both for extra air flow which is pretty cool too but now too my next problem say if i got either one of these they are very big i have an crosshair iv formula and have 2 sticks vengeance which is quite tall so would it all fit in?

No. The NH is not the better cooler. The SA is by a thin margin.

im just going by a review i saw but would they fit with my vengeance ram?
