My wife and I started playing Tree of Life ( http://store.steampowered.com/app/361800/Tree_of_Life/ ) and initially it was great fun, however with very few other players around it's getting boring quite quickly.

We loved the graphics, crafting, exploration and base building aspect of it. We're looking for a similar game where the focus is on base building, crafting etc but with a more active player base. PvP is cool but of secondary importance to us really. I've tried Terraria, Minecraft and Rust but haven't liked any of them.

Any recommendations for a similar type of game? There's so many sandbox games on Steam it's hard to pick the gems out. Ta :)

Rust sprung to mind, I don't play PvP focus, but I can see why you didn't like it. Sometimes it makes me want to hulk smash.

There aren't many out there with a lot of players.

Factorio isn't multiplayer but it's damned enjoyable.

Starbound is pretty cool.

I'll try to think of something more suitable.

The Forest. In EA (0.73) now at ~£10-£15, goes to £19 upon release.
Has a story, which can do at your own pace.
Has insane level of base building, traps, weapons etc too to defend your base/yourself.
You can even play it in custom mode where there's no enemies, but trust me, the enemies in this game are rather entertaining.

Seems I must have imagined playing it with other people then! (It is multiplayer FYI)

ARK could be worth looking in to, has reasonable longevity just a shame the performance optimization isn't all there.

Thanks for the flippant remark :D I was wrong, I meant it's not MP in the sense that you won't get any PvP, unless that's changed? I love the idea of competing bases and fighting for rescources.

All this chat got me right back into factorio, haven't played it since all the nuclear update stuff.

It's brilliant, but dangerous, for when I'm having trouble sleeping.

Ylands and The Forest look interesting, thanks for the suggestions. I know the sandbox genre is a bit old hat now but I've only just gotten into it. Subnautica looks like it might be an option for when I'm playing alone..

Rust is my favourite game in the genre, but it’s VERY PvP focused.

I would recommend Ark and joining a modded server or creating your own server and changing the parameters to suite you. Vanilla Ark is an awful Grundy experience and it takes hours to do anything, with the few parameters changed it becomes a great PvE online game
