As title really.

We will be jetting off somewhere hot and sunny for 10 days to two weeks soon and was thinking of getting some serious equipment but decided to just go with a good quality P&S. The better gear will follow once we get back.

I have stopped taking part in the photography hobby a few years back after selling my Nikon. I am however looking to get back into it and so is my other half.

Ideally we are looking for a compact that has a optical zoom and not digital if that's possibly at all. Not really fussed about the budget but anything around £150-£250 is ok.

Nikon Cool-Pix is one I have used before but that was a fair few years back now. I guess they have improved some what. I could be wrong.

Any others I should consider before taking the plunge?

In that price range I'd go for something like the Panasonic Lumix TZ40 - great bit of kit for not much money.

If you'd like a viewfinder, Panasonic Lumix LF1 is probably a good shout.

Being a bit of a Sony fanboy, I'd see if I could pick up a 2nd hand Sony RX100 MkII, but that might push your price up a bit. The first gen RX100 is still a wonderful bit of kit and worth a look.

I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 from Amazon, I got it for £190 at the time, but its now gone up to £236
Really pleased with it, also has an excellent zoom.

I took it to Italy last weekend for the MotoGp and took 165 pics over 3 days, all on the same battery charge:)

I second the RX100. The sensor so much much bigger than virtually all other similar sized compacts that you'd be hard pressed to beat it in terms of image quality. Unless you need a longer zoom then a Panasonic TZxx would be better. You should be able to get a RX100 mk1 for around the top end of your budget.

Olympus TG3 - we bought one just for beach holidays, but just got back from Mexico and used it the whole time and took more pics than with my G3. Very impressed.

Set up a price watch on camelcamelcamel - it gets discounted by £100 down to £250 quite often. Amazing in low light and in water. Only disadvantage is lack of high zoom if that's more important to you.
