I recently got a P5Q-Pro board cheap was wondering what would be a good chip to put in it ?
Have about £150 to spend on it it will primarily be used for gaming was thinking of the Q6600 or the E8500 and tending towrds the Q6600 am I thinking right or way off base ? Thanks.

If you are just using it for gaming, go for an E8400. They clock well and are better for games at the moment then quads. Games will start to implement more cores in the future, but in the near future Dual is good for most games and applications. It will also be cheaper allowing you to spend more money on a graphics card, something that is much more important for games these days.

I would go for the e8400/8500 at the moment. I'd much rather have the higher clock speed now and when future games are really taking full advantage of 4 cores then the current quads are unlikely to be able to cut it anyway.

What are you gonna cool it with? Air? Water? If air, I'd agree with the previous post. With a dual you could get better speeds. But, if you get water, then you can clock a quad to the same speeds. Though, if you still want a q6600, and still get a "bad" batch, then you can still easily achieve 3ghz with it anyway. More and more games are using quad cores now anyway.

Hi
Faced with the same choice ( I mostly play games on my PC) I went for an E8400 and am really pleased I did, easy to overclock, runs cool (50c under prime).
Saying that I've not tried the quad but all my research said E8400 unless you can run to a Q9450.

Im also facing the same decision coming from a Pentium 4. Either way its gonna be a huge improvement XD but I think I'm gonna go with the E8400 as I'm on a tight budget.

Q6600 gets my vote.
On air you can reach 3/3.2GHz quite comfortably + majority of decent games in the pipeline are making use of quads/multi cores.

I'd go for a Q6600 again :)

My mate has a clocked E8400 and to be honest, in games theres nothing between them.

Yet again another Q6600 vote, just remember to keep on your toes as Intel will be phasing them out to make people spend money on the newer products.

There's nowt between 'em really. Personally I'm a quad man, as a lot of modern games use more than two cores.
