Hi,

I am looking for a quality 2.1 speaker system for my desk both for music/movies and some gaming. Speakers need to be good looking, good sounding and preferably small/minimalist. Any ideas?

Thx

I know your question implies not a soundbar but nevertheless Soundblaster Katana. Nothing could be better in its form factor. You might miss a bit of mid range oomph though.
The answer to your question depends a bit on budget and how much you are prepared to pay for a little bit more result.

Just checked it and it's a bit expensive. I currently have an Altec Lancing 5.1 system which sounded great for many many years in the past but the subwoofer has started acting crazy in higher volumes (not very high, just normal).

Acoustic Energy Aego M and Corsair SP2500 are both very good. Aego M have been replaced with the more expensive Aego 3, and it looks as if the SP2500 have been discontinued for the second time.

If you can find Aego M or SP2500 then either would be a good choice for the right money. Aego 3 are £200 and not likely a huge improvement over the Aego M, just a different style with added Bluetooth connection. Whether any PC 2.1 speakers are worth £200 though, I don't know.

Doesn't leave much choice at all really when it comes to decent 2.1 speakers. There's Harman Kardon Soundsticks III, which are very good and a decent price for around £110, but I'm almost certain the looks will put you off as it does most people. Shame really, because they are very good speakers.

Not sure what other 'good' 2.1 speakers there are.

As has been said, there is not that many decent sets around and as Marsman has already said, if I was in the market now, I would get the Soundsticks for around £100, or the Aego 3 for around £180.

Go for some decent stereo speakers and a amplifier. Skip having a sub, at least for now.

I use some Celestion A1's for my PC system and they're great, no need for a sub.

For 2.1 I've used the Aego M's and they were great.

For 5.1 I've used the Logitech Z906's and they are OK but not a patch on a separate receiver and speakers.

Searching for in Internet, I have concluded to the following solutions:
1) Harman Kardon Soundsticks III - 178€ (seem to not have a separate volume control?)
2) Logitech Z623 - 142€
3) Edifier C2XD - 115€

I am impressed how the Altec Lansing have disappeared from the market....

For your budget don't bother with any of those.

Just go stereo.

I remember someone getting the Leviathan some time ago now. Who that was I can't remember, only that a different forum member created a thread asking for people's opinions on it and only one person replied. If you're interested in that, best look at reviews and comments on others sites.

Of the other 2.1 speakers mentioned; Edifier C2XD got good comments from a couple of forum members who bought them after their SP2500's failed.

As for the Z623; in my opinion, Logitech hasn't made a decent 2.1 set since the Z2300. The Z623 get good comments on the jungle site, which is to be expected. Most Logitech speakers do, because most people just want loud and bass. Expert reviews weren't particularly bowled over with the sound from them given the cost and they preferred the SP2500.

No, the volume control is a couple of touch sensitive buttons on the left stick.

All they seem to make now is portable Bluetooth speakers.

Klipsch are another that have pulled out of the PC speaker market, at least here in the UK. The Promedia were very good and are still available in the US. They'd be a great addition to the 2.1 market, especially now as the Aego M have been replaced with £200 speakers and the SP2500 have been discontinued...again.

Latest update: Got the Z533 to try them since they were really cheap and although bass is good, they lack in mid and high, like voices or effects. Just to be sure I replaced the Logitech speakers with the old Altec Lansing in the Logitech woofer and the old ones were more clear in voices and effects. Sending them back...

Stop messing around with low end crap PC speakers and get proper speakers perhaps?

Not surprised the Logitech's were underwhelming.

Problem with looking at stereo speakers when space is limited, means you'd be looking at small speakers. Small stereo speakers that are fairly similar in size to 2.1 satellites will seriously lack in bass, and that will only be compounded coming from a system with a subwoofer. You might need to look at speakers maybe with 5" woofers? Which are quite large in size. Small size and satisfying bass most of the time don't go hand in hand; although Audioengine A2+ do quite well given the small size.

My problem with the z533 were voices which didn't sound as reach as with the altec Lansing. Bass was ok. One more option could be the Edifier Luna which also get good reviews.
