Looking for a reasonable ISP

Hello there.

Well, I'm getting sick of Demon, they were great back in the day, but they're getting worse and worse, I get no reply from them to my e-mails, their online chat service never works, and the people in the call centres are worthless.

I originally went with Demon because they had one of the best ratios, and unlimited usage, then like most other ISPs, they introduced a FUP, which annoyed me slightly the first time I went over it as they didn't notify me that I was restricted by one, as when I took out their service many years ago, there was none, so by the time I knew about it, it was too late.

But there was nothing I could do except leave, so I waited nearly a month to be unrestricted.

They did of course send out warning e-mails to warn me I was approaching the limit, however, the first time around I didn't check for these, as I didn't know I was on a FUP.

But anyway, I have always kept an eye out for this warning e-mails since then, but recently I have formatted some machines, had to download lots of updates, etc.

And I thought my usage may be putting me near my limit, so I was always checking for e-mails, but there were none.

Until I come home one day and find the internet to be extremely slow, I then find one e-mail from Demon telling me I've used 64GB (limit is 50GB) and they'd have to take immediate "corrective" action. (10kB/s wooo!)

I complained about this as yet again they had changed their policy without notifying anyone, no longer do they warn you, they just restrict you without warning, with no way to be unrestricted even by paying a little extra.

I either get ignored or scripted answers, and not only this, now they have stopped sending out e-mails, to be able to use my connection without fear of going over the limit, I would need to disconnect my router for a month and then install software to monitor every machine to measure traffic over a rolling 30 days, as this is how Demon operate.

And since they refuse to show you your bandwidth records every time you ask, this is the only way to efficiently monitor it yourself.

So I looked at Be, who so profusely pride and advertise themselves on the fact they're completely unlimited with no hidden catches, haha, what a joke, as usual, a FUP with the right to cut you off for any reason they see fit, including "excessive usage" with no definitions.

So I looked at Sky, apparently I can't get their 16mb service here, which is unlimited, but I think that's down to the fact they can't guarantee the speed, I'm on 8mb Demon and max out at 8mb, so I think the line has a little more to give, and maybe Sky will put me on the 16mb package which is unlimited if I ring, as I'm only really interested in the unlimited, not the speed.

Their website however does say I can get their 8mb package with 40GB a month usage, and they state:

Our Base product allows 2GB of downloads per month, Mid and Connect offer 40GB, and Max is unlimited, (No Fair Use Polciy). Do not worry if you exceed your allowance, we will not cut you off or charge you extra. If you regularly exceed your limit, we will suggest you upgrade to a product more suited to your online needs.

How is this 40GB a month measured, does it reset on the first day of every month, or is it over a rolling 30 days like Demon?

And contrary to what they say when they're trying to entice you into buying, they contradict themselves into their T&Cs, suggest you upgrade means they will force you to and force a higher price on you, and we will not cut you off or charge you extra means they will suspend you for a month, charge you extra, or end your service indefinitely.

If after a reasonable period of time your usage still exceeds your Usage Cap, then we may do one or more of the following things by notice in writing (including by email):

(a) charge you fair and reasonable costs for your usage (and any reasonable administration costs) in excess of your Usage Cap;

(b) change your subscription to a Product with a higher Usage Cap, in which case we would also notify you of the new price you will be charged;

(c) suspend your use of Sky Broadband for the relevant month; or

(d) end your Contract in accordance with Condition 11 of your Contract;

So, I'm desperately trying to find an ISP that isn't a complete joke and reserves the right to completely **** over their users anyway they wish.

I'm not a heavy user, I've only gone over my limit of 50gb over a rolling 30 days twice, both at fault of Demon for not informing me of changes, but I'm not sure if I'll be any better off elsewhere as they all have draconian and out of touch policies.

And if I was going to pay for a service that's a higher price for being unlimited, I want unlimited, not an even worse FUP than I'm on now without any defined usage limits where they can do whatever they want to me.

So are there any decent ISPs left out there that you can recommend?

Either truly unlimited or a slightly less "corrective action" monthly usage service?

Thanks

You think too much about FUPs etc, if you already have Sky TV go for Sky Max at £10 a month, give them a ring once active and get them to lower the max delays and set a target SNR of 7dB for speed/stability.

If you dont have Sky TV then go with BE. If you have a longer line (+3KM) or attenuation is over say 45dB then go with BE Value rather than Pro and save a few quid. You could always go with O2 but I find that BE more than helpful if you need to raise a ticket or look at advanced configuration ie fastpath, 3dB SNR configs etc

I'm less than 1KM from my exchange with an attenuation of 25dB on Demon, the exchange apparently has no BE presence, and their website also confirms this.

So I don't think I have a lot of options, I don't have Sky TV, so I don't particularly want to go with them if I don't have to, customer service when I had Sky TV was ****.

If your exchange is Sky/Easynet enabled you'll be able to get UK Online - they use the same network and are a subsidiary (100% independent!) of the Sky group. They also have their own independent UK only tech support, dedicated 10gig rings (compared to the 155 meg BT centrals lol) and are pure awesome :D

Up to 16 megs downstream on ADSL2+ (uncapped to 24 if your line is good enough and you catch tier 3 with a nice email) with no limits. I'm connected at 21.5 megs atm, and download at around 2.3 MB/sec (i.e. 2,300 KB/sec). I also pull between 500GB and 1TB a month, every month. Never a word of complaint from UK Online, and never any slow-downs or throttling or anything of the sort. Ever.

They're just like Be, but without the regional DNS and congestion issues lol They have one of (if not the) largest backhauls in the UK, and so much spare bandwidth it's almost funny. Never a single issue with them in 18 months here, I love them! :D

They're £25.99 a month but you definitely get what you pay for.

The reason you won't be able to get the unlimited Sky offerings will be because you're on an exchange that they haven't unbundled.

Every sensible ISP will have a FUP to cover themselves and you're not going to get unlimited via BT Wholesale without parting with a sizeable amount of cash (like £93 a month from Zen). If you rarely go over 50GB, you're extremely unlikely to ever fall foul of any ISP's FUP (unless it's capped of course, but you should know about that when you sign up).

Idedicated 10gig rings (compared to the 155 meg BT centrals lol)

Compared to the 100Mbps coming out the back of the Sky router lolz0rs. Oh wait, that's not comparing the same things - there are several GigE connections coming out the back of a BT Wholesale DSLAM too...

Be have never invoked their FUP for excessive usage - at present, at least, it seems to be there simply for CYA purposes. Many people routinely download hundreds of GB/month with not a squeak of protest from Be.

If you're even a moderate user, I'd definitely recommend them (or 02) if your exchange is enabled - obviously there's no cast-iron guarantee that things won't change in the future, but that pretty much goes for every other provider out there.

I'm also with UK Online, although i live to far away from the exchange to get the super speed bb its still a quality service. The customer service is excellent, quick(ish) email replys and helpful phone support. I dont dl as much as 500gb - 1tb :eek: but ive never had a problem with usage limits.

To the OP: did you decide who your going to change to? Post your exchange code also for reference - cheers

Be broadband are a fantastic provider, truly unlimited downloads (hell one month I downloaded 850GB of information.
Excellent customer service and free support as well (admittedly it's in India, but good god the people at BE are the friendliest and most helpful i've ever dealth with).
