Hello everyone, I am looking for a smooth sounding compact sound bar. I currently have a very simple BOSE TV Speaker bar (left/right and centre dialogue) and was going to upgrade to the popular SONUS Beam Gen 2.

However, reading around I see a number of comments about the SONUS bar being harsh and bright. Can anyone comment or offer an alternative?

Many thanks

I have the gen 1 and think it's excellent. But I don't use it for music, and am not especially fussy about sound on TV and film.

The higher end version is the Sonos Arc, but I also know that people seem to enjoy the Beam with a Sonos Sub.

Sennheiser Ambeo plus if within budget as not cheap.

I don't find the Beam Gen 1 harsh at all. You can tweak the EQ or do the auto room correction.

I did find it lacked bass though. Adding the sub made a huge difference.

To the op don't buy a active soundbar unless you want to be limited on inputs and outputs, ability to add own choice of speakers and subwoofers.

Those passive soundbars with a cheap avr will allow you to add your choice of surround and subwoofers from budget to high end.

Then if you change avr you keep the soundbar. Or when you change soundbar you keep the avr.

Sonos means buying their own surround speakers and sub which are overpriced and not that great.

For the vast majority of people a Sonos system is more than enough.

I went from a pair of monitor audio BX6 floor standers with a BX center with a Denon 3500 to a Sonos Arc, sub Mini and a pair of Sonos One SL’s for rears and the total cost was around the same as I’d pay to upgrade my AVR to the Denon 4800.

My Sonos system sounds far better than my previous setup.

Yes a separates system is better, at a far higher cost and most people don’t have the room to set it up ideally.

Sounds like you didn't set the denon avr properly. No way would mid range avr and speakers sound worse than soundbar.
