Hi all,

I've been scouring the net for something a bit more personal for my partner's 30th birthday, amongst other ideas i was thinking a bottle of whiskey/rum/port from the year she was born (1991)... So far there's been a lot of naff sites coming up but some good options, the only problem is, my experience with anything fancy is zero... So I was just after some advice, or if anyone has done this before , any reputable sites would be much appreciated! Im not too fussy on the cost, but less than £150 would be great so I can afford her other gifts too.

Thanks in advance!

Both sites I use frequently. You can get a selection of samples if you want to spread it out.
Thanks man, master of malt seemed like the best earlier, might contact them to see if they have any up to date bottles, most say 28/29 and 1991 , would be nice to get the 30 and the right year if possible.

And you're absolutely right... I thought £50 was pricey before I started looking

The year has only just started so you won't see to many 30yr old whiskies yet from 1991.

£50 is closer to the budget end for most enthusiasts unfortunately. As soon as you start trying the older stuff, your wallet struggles to keep up. I only buy 2 bottles a year now as I am more selective. I have been spoilt on my whiskey journey though so now my tastes want to maintain that level. Just have to be careful as some are insanely overpriced for what they are (Macallan).

At least being 30, stuff is easier to get hold of and cheaper.
As soon as 40 comes along, the price leaps and 50... Incredibly limited selection and eye watering prices.

Oh, grain whiskey is cheaper than single malt at the same age generally. New grain is not nice (Haig) but old grain is great (min 25yrs).

Had a peek at some of the older bottles and the price shoots up exponentially! Looking at a few grand for some of them... Maybe one day just for a laugh when the midlife crisis hits
Personally, I can't touch it, bad experience back in the day, now the smell of it gets me heaving, although after watching suits, I'd love to be able to wear a suit and grab a glass of scotch... Unfortunately I'd never been that cool!

Does she even like whiskey?

I’d also say buying whisky of that age for £150 is unlikely to get you anything that great. As a whiskey fan I’d sooner spend £150 on a younger bottle that would be genuinely excellent. I appreciate that misses the point of the gift though.

lol, mate, stick to Penhaligons or something. Your Mrs doesn't want Whiskey :p
What other things do you know about OP's partner that he doesn't?

I had my fair share of horrible shots of whisky as a teenager, didn't stop me from growing a love for the stuff now. Try drinking it nice and slow, you might be surprised.
