My mum's after a new Vacuum since we just sold our Hoover and our Henry is getting too much to keep lugging around and up and down stairs, and we have had him since my Nan bought it in the 1980's.

She is torn beteen Dyson and Shark, and will NOT go for G Tech as products she had in the past she didn't like.

MAX budget is £250.

Both parents shed a lot of long hair so that's something to keep in mind.

If only it were that easy, I keep my head shaved to Grade 1 most of the time lol. I'm looking at a Shark DuoClean LiftAway for £179 seems good to me.

I really like our shark, but my wife hates it and think it carp and doesn't suck. It's always because she's either vacuumed something to big or its full/filters blocked.

I've heard Shark are good.

I'd stay away from Dyson I think they are selling cheap ***** these days off the back of an established brand.

I have a Bosch cordless it's pretty good, but I hear good things about Shark.

Miele C3 here, love it.

A great vacuum! Mother in law had two for some reason which I often used. PITA for vacuuming stairs though and I have two flights in my house. I went for a Dyson V10 which has been great in the two years we've had it.

I have a Which? subscription so just went and looked.

Shark DuoClean LiftAway TruePet is the only upright vacuum with a Best Buy award. This one: https://sharkclean.co.uk/product/shark-lift-away-upright-vacuum-cleaner-true-pet-nv601ukt/ £160 with next day delivery direct from Shark. All the others rated ahead of it are cylinder vacuums. Miele C3 is the best one in your budget, I have this myself too and it is a very good vacuum. But that shark one will be much easier to use on stairs than the miele.

If you want any more recommendations from Which let me know.

I had a Shark and returned it. I can't remember the model but it was a compact cordless version. The dust collector was tiny and it got jammed up so easily. My ageing Dyson V6 does a better job.
If it had to be cordless I'd get a Dyson V10 from the Dyson eBay outlet. If it had to be corded I'd get a Miele C3.

V10 may be too pricey, altough if I was buying I'd go for a V11. I'll have a look around for a V10 or V9 assuming they exist. Do any of these V6-V10 come with anti hair tech?

Edit: Just seen that's what the Animal ones are, doh.

I've got this Shark - prior to that, had a Dyson. On first use, you could see the bin filling - which wouldn't be so bad, apart from the fact the Dyson had only just hoovered the morning before delivery.

The only complaint I have and hear from other, is the cleaning of edges isn't as good as Dysons. But the extra dirt it picks up easily outweighs that small negative.

Mums just ordered the Dyson Ball Animal 2. Bit over what she wanted to pay and saw a lot of people complain, and some with images, about the Shark;s "Anti Hair" tech.

I've got the shark and would not buy again for the same reasons.

Yeah we did some looking up on that, seems a lot of people having issues, hopefully we made the right choice with the Dyson. I've wanted one for years.

Don't get a Dyson, you'll spend £400 on a fancy looking machine with the material quality of a crisp packet. Load of crap nowadays.

Nice one cheers, yeah stairs here are quite narrow so that lift away seems the best bet.

Just spent £350 on the new top model shark cordless and its replacing a £120 miele because of the weight and stairs issue for the wife.

Shark is highly rated and only bested by the top end dysons which cost £600.

Check out vacuum wars on YouTube. They do a full guide on vacuums rating the best budget, mid end and premium models.

So something for everyone.
