looking for action/rpg games with a great story/characters

Planescape Torment.

This!

also baldurs gate 1 & 2, and too a lesser extent, Arcanum of steamworks and magick obscura.

also look at icewind dale for a more tactical action packed sort of game.

Get these. to be honest as much as i like The Witcher games like Planescape and Baldurs Gate make it look like a fisher price rpg.

Planescape might be difficult to get hold of now :p worth it for the story alone though, Chris Avellone and his team did an excellent job.

Superb voice work too, including heavyweights such as John de Lancie and Jennifer Hale :)

Lol just me and one other bloke couldnt be bothered to read the whole post before posting by the looks of it. :)

Fixed :p

I second Icewind Dale. Ive just gone through Icewind Dale 1 and Baldurs gate 1, now im hitting IWD2.

I tried going back through KOTOR 1 again but its never the same a second time.

I did get a bit bored of BG1 near to the end, it ws all a bit too easy.

Drakensang is ok, If you played any of the old (Pre win 95, well the first one was any way :p) Realms of Arkania games then this is set in the same RPG universe. It has it's faults but I do like the story, graphics are ok to good and it has (being a german game) a huge number of stats that can be played with.

At first, but I just couldn't get in to the story or care about the characters, by the time I was under the city fighting giant rats, I gave up due to lack of interest.

I gave up once I hit the forest with the witches in it. The story really is terrible, which is a pity, the rest of the game is really well done.

I would also suggest Baldurs Gate :)

You can pick up both games (with both expansions) in one box set quite cheap. Then using BG Tutu you can run BG1 with the BG2 engine, allowing higher res and a wider choice of classes / races than BG1 alone.

I'm the same as you, can't get into a game without a story. Is Mass Effect well worth playing from this point of view? Always had a look at it and never got round to it.

Oh, and play Beyond Good and Evil. Right up your alley, and probably the most upsettingly overlooked games of the past few years.

Mass Effect should not be missed. The story/characters/voice acting are all grand. I didn't play it as a strictly rough and ready soldier class, so before I settled into the combat, I was quite often surprised at how quickly I would get waxed, but as I levelled up it panned out.

A pal badgered me into picking up Beyond Good and Evil some months back, but try as I might, I couldn't get it working on vista x64.

I've started up NWN again, and it's going pretty well so far. I'm not sure a human/monk was such a good idea, though. My first party member has this big morning star thing and I can't help but fancy a go of it

I've got Baldurs Gate 2, had it for years and never given it a proper go. The dreaded lure of fancy 3D and more instant action, I guess. Something to try again after this bout of NWN.

I've got Thief: Deadly Shadows, which I had totally forgotten about! I'll have to give that another crack

With a list like that, definitely Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines. Although I'd be surprised if you haven't played it, considering.
