Hi Guys,

So I've currently got a Beyerdynamic MMX300 Gen1 gaming headset plugged in to onboard sound, Z390 Aorus Master. While the headset still sounds good to my ears, it's seen better days and the headband has broken.

I need a new headset, but I've also seen a lot of people using the external dacs etc. I figure if I'm going to replace my headset, I may aswell get the best gaming audio experience I can While I'm at it.

I play mostly rts, rpg, fps games so 7.1 surround might be nice and I spend a fair amount of time on Discord so a mic is essential.

But do I get a gaming headset, separate headset and mic, I'm not sure. Don't want or need speakers either.

So guys with a budget of £400 (willing to go higher for a much better experience) what do recommend?

If you find someplace to try out the Audeze Mobius, I think you would really like them. I have mine two years now and have tested a lot of other headphones/amps since and nothing has made me want to switch over.

They are great for music and brilliant for games. The Mobius is an extremely versatile headset.

Try the Audeze Mobius as @melmac said (I would be interested in hearing them too)

For £478 you could get the following which I have below. Beyerdynamic MMX300 are closed, so i'm sure you will like the DT1770.

£360 - Beyerdynamic DT 1770 PRO
£75 - Soundblaster G6 X
£25 - V-Moda Boompro
£18 - Rean Mini XLR female to 3.5mm female (so you can connect the Boompro directly to headphones)

All prices inc VAT & postage

First choise should same as with anything involving headphones:
Do you have noisy environment needing closed ear cup design, or quiet environment allowing use of open headphones?
Good open headphones offer lot better chances for good comfort in long usage sessions than closed headphones, but sound isolation is at level of basically meaningless.

Don't have experience from DT1770, but basing on its use of "Tesla" driver shared with DT1990 Pro/Amiron Home it might loose to DT770 based MMX300 in some areas.
Amiron Home and DT1990 Pro lose to DT990 in size of sound stage, though details/positioning are excellent. (and bass better)

Oh yeh, always go open if you can. I had open but living in a city centre things can get noisy and things like girlfriends hairdryer, hoovering and TV is highly annoying.
Can have the best open soundstage in the world but a hoover and eurovision song contest on the TV will wreck that sound!
Closed headphones also offer a great amount of bass / sub bass too over open backs
