After a slight disaster with my leg of lamb being undercooked (marginally). I'm looking for an oven thermometer.

After looking at the Heston ones they all get quite poor reviews and were released a few years ago, nothing up to date or revised. Also reports of not being able to set a custom temperature.

I don't mind spending the money if it's a quality product and will last. I'd prefer a digital probe for obvious reasons and perhaps a device that will also measure the oven temp also, or even two seperate devices.

Cheers.

P.S. The pulled pork was a big hit with all.

do you want a leave in or instant read? If it's an instant read, a super fast thermapen is ideal. Not cheap but reliable and far quicker than others.

It has been revised and you can now set custom temperatures, although there's still plenty of stock out there of the old models.

And if you want something that'll beep at you when your food reaches a certain temperature, it's now probably one of the better options readily available, especially for under twenty quid.

I've got a Range on the way, but thus far I've managed to cope okay by using two Oxo oven thermometers to keep tabs on how hot my oven is and a Thermapen for everything else.

Glad to hear the pulled pork went well :)

Lots of useful info in the link above. I've personally also used the below cheap ebay/amazon temperature probes (also with a temperature alarm feature) and they're very good for the price. They are quite easy to break though.

I use a thermapen for instant read stuff. Initially I was sceptical about how much better it would be to use but after trying it out I'm a convert.

I like the idea of the Heston one, where it sounds outside the oven. Means I can keep an eye in it and saves me opening the oven door and allowing the temp to drop to probe the meat.

Those thermapens are pricey, I'm sure they're worth it. I'll probably take a punt on the Heston one and failing that I'll stump up the cash for a thermapen.

Just to confirm. If I buy the one listed on Amazon, I will receive the revised version? I seen the first reviewer mentioned it was revised but there was no mention in the description.

Is the Oxo quite accurate? I don't like Fahrenheit being the large numbers, will make reading Celsius quite tricky through an oven door.

Guaranteed I'll break, I'm not very elegant in the kitchen. I'll order this Heston dual probe one and see how that goes. I can see me biting the bullet and getting a thermapen however. They look good.

You can find them for less than £30, refurbished from the company that makes them.

Such a worthwhile investment and a steal at that price.

I really couldn't say for sure, despite Salter's website saying there's a new USER functionality on the devices.

But Amazon's returns are easy-peasy, so it's worth the risk. I know the ones in Waitrose/John Lewis are the newer version, however.

Pretty good, actually. And mine came with the °C as the larger numbers, so I think you'll probably be okay as there's a UK and US model and I bought mine from Amazon.

The best thing about the Oxo thermometer is the opaque bezel, meaning it's effectively backlit in the oven for easy reading.

One thing I should add about the Heston probe is the temperature range it works within.

At 35°C to 140°C it could be said somewhat limited, although I suppose that really depends on what you've got in mind for it.

It has preset temperatures depending on the type of meat. Beef has presets, Rare, Medium Rare etc.

I also have a Heston one and it is poor compared to the CDN one I have, you can't leave the Heston ones on the oven like you can with my CDN one.

I've ordered the Heston dual probe and the oxo oven thermometer. My concern is obviously how accurate the reading is.

The one above looks good, but again, is 63 degrees really 63 degrees?

The cable to the probe is oven safe, so you can leave it in the meat and have the display unit on the worktop or hanging off your oven door etc etc.

The Heston one has a plastic lead so you can't leave it in the oven.

Give me five minutes, I will boil some water and probe it with the CDN one and the Heston one. :D

Really? I thought the point of the Heston one was have the cable running from the meat to the probe on the worktop, he shows this in his video? Surely it's not designed as an instant read thermometer?
