HI I am looking for a new laptop.
Budget is £800
I don't want bigger than 15" or 15.x"
8gb RAM

Not a heavy gaming rig, will play some older games and not so graphic intense games but still want something fairly good. Also using it as backup to my office desktop and for travelling with. SSD not top of the list, would prefer to spend on a larger SATA 72000 rpm but SSD would be good for OS and to boot from. All suggestions welcome.

I'm in a similar situation, been investigating gaming laptops priced around £800 for the past few months. The best ones i have come across new within this price range are:

Acer V15 Nitro Black Edition
Asus G551JM
MSI GE60 Apache Pro
Lenovo Y50-70
************ Optimus VI (Clevo N150SD/Schenker XMG A505)

At the moment i'm most tempted by the Optimus VI as this offers the 3.6GHz i7-4720HQ and the 960M which are both the newest processors in their lines. The main advantage choosing this one is that you can customise the spec to pretty much whatever you like. The one i configured myself worked out at £781 which is an awesome price compared to other laptops i've seen with this spec. And it has a fingerprint scanner too which could come in quite handy if you're working in environments where other people might touch your laptop.

There's some new GE60 Apache Pro's on the CCL Computers eBay store priced at £800, but this laptop is slightly more bulkier than the Optimus and it has the marginally slower i7-4710HQ and 860M. However it does have the multicoloured SteelSeries keyboard which looks immense!

It would be difficult coming across a V15 Nitro at this price range but i have seen some refurbished ones in excellent condition around with the 4K screen. The Asus G551 and Lenovo Y50 are both easy to pick up for less than £800 but there's nothing particularly special about those.

Disagree, Y50-70 is the best option at that price point, ordered one from lenovo's site for £810 on a May day bank holiday special, nothing apart from pc specialist comes close with i7-4720HQ, 16GB, 960m 4GB, Full HD IPS screen and fabulous JBL speakers.

Receiving it tomorrow, hope it'll play the Witcher 3 but it might just come short on native res, hopefully system requirements have been slightly overdone.

Sounds extremely tempting, i didn't realise they even did the Lenovo Y50 with the i7-4720HQ and 960M. At that price it's a steal, although some of the screens on those Y50's are pretty terrible. Shame the offer isn't still running because i would've considered buying one for myself.

Yes the TN panel version is awful, the IPS version is much better, you can buy the one i'm getting for £899.99 on lenovo.com, i've been doing a ton of research and think you should order one, the dual fan cooling system is excellent, the pc specialist has questionable build quality with many people moaning about clevo online, you can get a two year warranty collect and return for just £1 off lenovo.

I've just gone for an Acer Aspire Nitro 15.6" with 960m. It's only 1080p, and i5, but the screen seems to get good reviews.

I couldn't resist for the price - about £720 in various places.

Should be a nice upgrade from my XPS 14 with 630m!

I have just got an Asus G551JW it's a really nice machine for the money. I did have the MSI ge60 but the thing was like a hair dryer when pushed.

I'm quiet surprised how well the 2GB 960m does tbh.

Ok Jimbo, let us know how you get on with it.

Seems the three of us have very similarly specced 15.6' laptops, wonder how well the 960m will cope with the Witcher 3.

Ok thanks, 860m owners are reporting pretty decent performance with hairworks turned off 30 to 45 fps, better than they were expecting, the 960m should see a nice increase of 5 to 10 fps.

I'm wondering if Nvidia will be optimising performance even further esp on the 900m series.

Loving this Acer!

I don't have Witcher 3 I'm afraid, but the reviews here should give a good idea of performance:

As I say, I've gone for the i5 version with 1080 screen and installed my own M.2 SSD, which was WELL worth it. Mine scores bang on 5000 in 3DMark11 vs. ~5400 in the review with an i7.

:)
