Right, the head gasket on my punto has gone again. Im looking for a really cheap replacement. I was looking at:

Nissan Micra
Vauxhall Cavalier

which would be more reliable? and cheaper to get hold of?

My budget is £500

Rover 216GTi. Or similar.

Can't really go wrong with a Chavalier though, provided you get one that's been fairly well looked after though - not owned one mind, I just assumed that they're pretty dire if you've got a boggo engined one :)

The thing is, i need it to be reliable for at least 2 months, until college finishes.

The Rover 216GTi has a Honda engine... so no need to worry about headgaskets or things like that.

Plus, you can get them VERY cheaply. Any wedge shape 216 (pre-bubble) will have a Honda engine.

Nissan Primera. Mine cost me £430 just over 2 years ago, runs perfectly and has sailed through the last 2 MoTs. Boring but reliable transport.

I've got a H reg Volvo 440 with 40k on the clock for 500 notes. It is in Garstang oop norf however.

For £500, you want to be finding something with cheap insurance too, so anything 1.8 or less at 18. You could find a Primera maybe. Best bet is probably a Mondeo though. With any £500 car you're gonna need someone with a mechanic background with you as there are some dogs out there you really don't want to driving.

Err thats exactly what he is doing and exactly what he has posted this thread for

I just meant some POS that really doesn't matter how long it'll last, and something that would be really low on insurance. So some old little Micra would be better than a chavalier really.

And yes, I see your point about me being stupid :p

Problem is, for £500, this is bang in the middle of First Car terroritory. Demand for non-about to explode Micras is high, whereas nobody wants a £500 Cavalier.

Thus, better quality Cavs exist at this pricepoint.

Yeh, but a Cav is roughly 10+ on insurance groups, and a Micra is 2-3ish, means it'll cost more overall. I do see your point about what people want to buy though. :)

Cavs start from Insurance Group 6.
