Its not really what they are lacking, they just completely changed and ruined what Settlers II had.

The Settlers II 10th anniversary edition has original Settlers 2 gameplay, but with nicer graphics. Its the best game in the whole series.

Expansion is limited to taking over neutral towers too, which makes the games feel very linear to me. I wanna build stuff wherever I wanna build it dammnit!

Also recruiting soldiers is just a pain in the bum.

Fail x 2 then. Not being able to play that freely and soldiers. Ugh
