Hi All,

Been playing Tribes ascend of late and it is highly CPU dependant (badly coded). I have a 2600K which I am running at 4.8 (custom water) and was thinking about an upgrade. The game only uses 4 cores so I would ideally need a chip that could do 4.8 and is clock for clock faster than my 2600K. Any ideas?

The obvious choice would be the 3770k. That should hit 4.8 on custom water and is clock for clock faster than the 2600. It is not a huge performance jump however, and I doubt it would solve your problem completely. In terms of quad cores though the 3770k is as good as mainstream processors get currently

does turning off HT make any difference to overclocking? maybe you could squeeze a bit more out of it if it does.

You know... there's absolutely no point in upgrading from the 2600K. There's the 3770K but the performance gains won't be worth the money.

Seeing as the game is multiplayer, have you ever considered the performance problems might be caused on the server side of things?

I don't think many 3770Ks hit 4.8. Most will do 4.5-4.6, water makes next to no difference unless you de-lid.

A CPU upgrade is unlikely to improve things. If a 2600k @ 4.8 cant handle it and the game only uses 4 cores then nothing can handle it.

Seriously that's the funniest thing I've heard all day. For a game like Tribes you already have the fastest CPU on the planet. In practical terms it is not possible to get a faster one without upgrading your cooling setup. IB is only 3% faster clock for clock and you might find that due to the TIM problems it clocks slower and is therefore the same speed.

You may find in MM the occasional socket 2011 chip that can go 5.2ghz with HT on so if you bought one there and turned off HT you should be able maybe to get slightly higher. I know what you mean with cpu being a major factor in some otherwise tame looking games like wow in cities with ultra settings is just stupid that the best cpu gets 40fps@2560x1600. I would sell my 4.75ghz 3820 if I knew I was replacing it with another 3820 that does 5.2.
