Hey, I'm looking for a new MP3 player and have some features that need covering:

- At least 30-40 gig HD, I like a lot of music.

- I don't mind it playing video, this would be useful, but I don't want a big breakable shiny screen - the iPod 80gig is a perfect example of the size and construction I'm looking for

- I will be in South-East Asia and need to be able to charge it up, I have heard of people saying you can't even charge it in the UK from the mains, it needs USB - is this true? Will iPod charge in Asia?

Basically the 80gig iPod is perfect for what I need, its just I would like something media player compatible if possible, and it would be cool to have something different to everyone else I know - the Microsoft Zune is very appealing, is there any reason I shouldn't get one off ebay? Will it work over here?

You'd have thought there would be more competition for high-capacity MP3 players, but creative have nothing.. Only one 32gig model at £249.00

So yeah, there are the features, again the most important thing is that I can use and charge it in South East Asia, and that it's not real delicate..

Thanks!

iPod can be charged through USB cable connected to a computer or through a mains power cable. You can buy these on eBay for as little as £4 ish

iTunes > WMP (IMO)

iPods don't have 80+% of the market for no reason - they're compact, have lots of useful features, are easy to use, well built and are good value for money.

I much prefer WMP personally, and as I have a media centre setup and like my pc streamlined and highly organised, being able to scrap itunes would be good.

I have an iPod mains charger already, but do they work in Asia? I know I need a convertor, but even then some electronics don't work properly with lower voltage, but some do..

the ipod should work in Hong Kong and Japan, if worst come to worst, plug it into an USB device and charge it there.

It's highly unlikely I will encounter any USB devices in Vietnam and Cambodia - if I purchased an ipod charger out there it would work fine on a European iPod?

Yes. To check your current charger check what voltage it can use on the back and see if it matches the mains voltage where you're going

SE Asia isn't the back end of beyond it used to be. When I went there 10 Years ago Chaweng didn't have roads; when I went there four years ago there was a Boots on Koh San Road.

Trust me, you'll find internet cafes with usb connectioned everywhere in Cambodia and Vietnam, mates who were there from November to January updated their facebook almost every day.

Get an Ipod, USB charger, a UK charger, a universal plug and a Freeloader solar charger (with adapter as required) and you'll be fine.

I have the 80G Zune and it's superb, with very good sound quality and video playback and I'm sure you could purchase a universal charger, thereby enabling you to charge it anywhere.

The software isn't too bad either, I've not had many problems using it for video and music.

The video's may need to be converted, but Videora is a nice converter and pretty quick as well.

Thanks for the info, Kev I am particularly interested as you own one -

Someone on ebay was selling one, claiming that he bought it for backpacking but couldn't take it as it required a USB charger - you know of any UK power supplies around? Could I plug the USB lead from it, into my powersupply unit on my existing ipod? Is it just electrical hardware or is it more complicated than that?

I have a zune and can't fault em to be honest the firmware uppdates are great the picture and video quality is amazing and the screen is superb

I love mine the sound quality is also amazing you can make it a perfect mp3 player

and accecories can be picked up cheap :)
