Hi all

I'm looking to build a new gaming PC for around £2,000 (can move upwards to £2,250 if that makes a big difference).

I've currently got the Alienware AW3423DWF monitor that I game on. The part I'm struggling with most is what GPU to get between 9070 xt, 5070 ti and 5080.

Currently I have a build including:

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 4.7 GHz 8-Core Processor
ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro A-RGB 360 77 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard
G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory
Western Digital WD_Black SN850X 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive
Corsair FRAME 4000D RS ARGB ATX Mid Tower Case

This works out at around £1,300 without the GPU.

Any input is much appreciated.

Its the Ultrawide 1440p freesysnc premium pro model of the monitor you have by the looks of it. :)

Obviously the fastests is the 5080- 5070ti- 9070xt and the price goes the same way. To stay in your budget you will have to eliminte the 5080 as its a grand in general. Also there have been instances of melting 5080 connectors and poor drivers (ATM) for the 5*** sereies in general.
Personally I would look at the 5070ti and 9070xt as they are quite similar in performance and then look at what you need with your gaming needs like dlss/FSR, better RT etc.

Thanks all. PC is mostly used for gaming, but also for work with some AutoCAD and maybe Revit in the future.

Games played can be all kinds from indy games to currently playing FFXVI, Marvel Rivals and Clair Obscure Expedition 33.

You will probably be better off with an nvidia cpu for autocad and revit. The more GPU memory the better.

So even if an Nvidia GPU was better suited, what would be recommended? Obviously the 5080 is the better card, but is it worh it over the 5070 Ti?

For games: the 5070 Ti is good enough for 1440p. The 5080 is around 15% faster, but depending on how much you push the settings that can mean more to you than it sounds (in terms of playability). The 5080 will last longer before you have to make compromises.

Does any of your work stick the GPU at 100% for extended periods? I'm guessing not?

9800x3d = 5080 build coming in at just over £2k with money spent in the right places:

My basket at OcUK:
  • 1 x AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Eight Core 5.20GHz (Socket AM5) Processor - Retail (SKU: PRO-AMD-03517) = £449.99
  • 1 x MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI (AMD AM5) B850 ATX Motherboard (SKU: MOT-MSI-03993) = £218.99
  • 1 x Kingston FURY Beast EXPO RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C30 6000MHz Dual Channel Kit (SKU: MEM-KNG-03706) = £99.94
  • 1 x Palit GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming Pro 16GB GDDR7 PCI-Express Graphics Card (SKU: GRA-PAL-04059) = £950.00
  • 1 x NVIDIA - DOOM: The Dark Ages Premium Edition Game Bundle (SKU: DIG-NVI-05178) = £0.00
  • 1 x WD Black SN850X 2TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS200T2X0E) (SKU: HD-591-WD) = £122.98
  • 1 x Thermalright Aqua Elite 360 Black ARGB V3 All In One CPU Cooler (SKU: COO-TLR-03256) = £50.00
  • 1 x Antec CX800 ARGB Mid Tower - White (SKU: CAS-ATC-04164) = £64.99
  • 1 x Lian Li Edge Gold 850W Black Power Supply (SKU: POW-LIA-03764) = £95.99

Total: £2,052.88 (includes delivery: £0.00)

Thanks for this. Leaning towards a 5080 build. No real need for X870, was just thinking of future proofing but I'm not 100% on all the types of AM5 motherboards and all their features.

No, my work doesn't get my GPU near 100%. Most of the AutoCAD I do is only 2D. Even when using Revit, it won't be for high detail renders.

the main difference is usb4 on x870, b850 doesn't have usb4
for the b850 tomahawk max, it still has pcie 5 to the gpu slot and the main ssd slot
also 5gb lan and wifi 7
also near best in class vrms

unless you desperately need usb 4, i'd save the dosh tbh. heck, even usb 3 20gbps isn't widely used

Sounds like there's no real benefit for your work then (especially since they have the same VRAM), so just down to the higher gaming performance.

Messes up the M.2 slots on a lot of boards too, more trouble than it is worth at the moment.
