Hello,

My car was involved in a hit and run while parked outside. I at the time had no driver details or camera footage. I call my insurance to log the incident and reported it to the police.
Fast forward a couple of months the police got the guy on a camera from a shop and he been issued a driver safety awareness course £180 out his pocket.
The police will not provide me driver details I must claim through insurance or get a solicitor.

In the meantime before getting the driver details I have spent £476 on repairs out my own pocket because I didn't want to claim on my own insurance because that would go down as a fault and I would need to pay my excess and loose NCD.

Now the driver has come forward and wants to exchange details but I have already paid for repairs I can ask hi to pay me the loss of money or can I still go through his insurance to get reimbursement for repair cost?

im suprised he even came forward ! ?

my guess would be not to go through insurance, if you've already paid, then surely you just want the money, so even if you get either the full amount or say £400 off him, its better than nothing!

I am surprised he come forward also. I can only assume he doesn't want to be more effected with future insurance if I managed to claim against him and police record.

That is the thing I would be happy to just accept the money but I do not know yet until I speak with him directly tomorrow. He just knocked this afternoon and spoke with my wife's mum.

If he refuses to pay then I go through his insurance I guess.
But that is my question can I claim just the money back?

Contrarily, I’d do the opposite of @ShiWarrior, not that he’s wrong, but just I would do it different based on my experiences.

If the insurance knows about the incident, then your premiums are likely to rise anyway even without making a claim, even if you weren’t in the car (which you weren’t).
If they don’t know about it, I’d tell them, as if they do find out then they may cancel your insurance without notice, or any refund. And from this point onwards for future insurance quotes you now have to say “yes” to the question “have you had insurance refused or cancelled?”. I’ve seen this scenario happen.

I’d want to speak to my insurance and find out what the options were. Personally, I’d be looking to ensure I wasn’t at a loss for the repair.

I doubt you'd be able to claim back via insurance seeing as you've already made the repairs yourself. They're not just going to write you a cheque for a repair that they can't validate or assess the repairable value.

If the guy doesn't want to pay you in cash then I reckon you're going to be out of pocket.

maybe have pictures of the damage and the guy can assert it was him that did it, and his insurance company can then see the bill for the associated repairs and pay out ..
if you had already notified your insurance wasn't the renewal&ncd already going to be reviewed by them, irrespective of potential value of repairs payed by his insurance.

If they have the police report and invoices, etc. they might - these things are kind of weirdly hit and miss with insurance companies - for some stuff they seem to just pay out and I guess factor it into future costs individually and/or general increases.

I do have a full police record, even footage "that I haven't seen"
I also have the receipt of the work from the garage that I can hand over to the insurance company.

I won't be going through my insurance it will be his insurance that I will claim against.
It's just I am new to all of this and I am not sure if I am able to claim for my own cost.

I guess I just expect the money is a loss.

With him driving off there could also be the small chance that he wasnt insured
